Emma Samms On Playing Holly Sutton On ‘General Hospital’
Emma Samms is a General Hospital fan-favorite. The British-born actress has reprised her role as Holly Sutton for four decades, originally leaving the series to play Fallon Carrington in the original Dynasty.
Subsequently, GH fans should be thrilled to know that she will be part of the General Hospital: 60 Years Of Stars And Storytelling on Thursday, January 4, at 10 p.m. Eastern, on ABC.
What does she say about her role in the series?
Holly And Scorpio Not In Original General Hospital Plan
When Emma Samms joined General Hospital in 1982, she was there as a love interest for Luke. However, that quickly changed. Speaking to TV Insider, she spoke about the original story.
As fans recall, Luke was gone, and presumed dead when Holly found out she was pregnant, it was Robert Scorpio who was there for her. They got into a marriage of convenience so that she was not deported. Tragically, she lost her baby. But, were Holly and Luke meant to be together when he showed up again?
Yes, I believe that was the plan. Gloria Monty was spectacularly good at seeing what the audience was responding to and going with that. The writing was so spot-on. They didn’t write our story a year in advance. They’d see what was working and what wasn’t and they were flexible.
With this, Emma Samms revealed what Gloria Monty’s plan originally was. Monty is still considered one of the legendary soap producers. They may have intended on Luke and Holly, but fans wanted Holly and Scorpio, and that became a legendary romance.
Holly also pointed out something pretty rare on television. She and Tristan portrayed a happily married couple. As the interviewer pointed out, their relationship ran the gamut From drama to comedy. Emma Samms agrees.
Yes, we were also a happily married couple on TV that the audience didn’t find dull. That was due to the writing. That holds today. I think that the audience is still rooting for [Robert and Holly]. I know they are. The audience is there.
Perhaps this is a hint that she is ready to return. Perhaps. But, what will Emma be doing in the big-prime time special?
Emma Samms ‘Delighted To Be Asked’
Although Emma Samms lives a life in England and has starred in other series, she appreciates that the General Hospital people ask her back.
She revealed that she was “delighted to be asked.” Then, she continued that although she cannot keep up with the show in England, she does keep connected through social media.
Therefore, this special evening is a way to thank all of those fans and “say thank you.”
Don’t miss General Hospital: 60 Years Of Stars And Storytelling on Thursday, January 4, at 10 p.m., Eastern, on ABC.
