ABC is airing General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling, a primetime event that celebrates its 60th anniversary. The special will have fans, cast members, and creators talking about what the soap means to them. It will also feature plenty of clips from the past 60 years.

General Hospital is celebrating 60 years of the popular daytime soap opera this week on ABC. The special is called General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars and Storytelling. It will have clips of some of the biggest moments in the show’s history. Additionally, the stars of the show will talk about what it all meant to them.
The special anniversary episode will air on Thursday night, January 4, at 10/9c on ABC. It will also stream the following day on Hulu. According to the promo, the show will celebrate the best stories and characters, along with some of the biggest stars from the past returning to celebrate this special moment.
Who will be on the General Hospital primetime special?
As expected, there will be plenty of people who currently star on the ABC soap opera talking about the long-running soap. This includes Emmy winners like Genie Francis (Laura Spencer), Finola Hughes (Anna Devane), Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos), and Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos). Also returning are past stars, including Emma Samms (Holly Scorpio), Rick Springfield (Noah Drake), and Amber Tamblyn (Emily Quartermaine).
Another favorite seen in the promo video includes Tristan Rogers, who has played Robert Scorpio for the last four decades. In a funny moment, the cast (past and present) talk about the first time they watched General Hospital. For many, it was when they were kids and Luke and Laura got married. That episode brought in 30 million viewers in 1981, showing how huge the soap was at the time. That is still the most-watched soap opera episode in American daytime television history.
However, for Tristan Rogers, his first time to ever watch the soap opera was when he made his first appearance in it. He joked he wanted to see how bad he really was, and was surprised he was actually pretty good.
General Hospital: The Legacy
There are a lot of things this special can cover, as General Hospital is one of the most beloved and celebrated soap operas in history. It mostly ignored the love stories and went instead with intrigue, murder, and adventure, making it line up well with its biggest rival over the years, Days of Our Lives.
While Luke and Laura proved that romance could sell – and sell big – there was much more to the series than that. What was once a look at the people working at the titular hospital, things soon moved away to other parts of Port Charles. This included the WSB (World Security Bureau), which saw names like Robert Scorpio and Anna Devane protecting the world from terrorists.
Other major storylines surrounded the organized crime in Port Charles, which saw Sonny Corinthos as the crime lord. The fact that he is also one of the most popular characters on the show proves that General Hospital was never afraid to push boundaries and do things other TV shows might have avoided.

I absolutely plan on watching the GH Primetime special. I have been watching since the ‘Ice Princess’ story in 1981. I was thirteen years old, and my best friend had me over after school. She had already been a fan for a few years. I remember the moment I heard Tristan Rogers’ voice. From that day on, I was hooked. I just love the chemistry he had (and still has) with everyone he has ever worked with. As time has gone on, I have really come to love everyone on the show.
