‘Life Below Zero’ Hailstone’s Living The True Alaskan Experience
There are a lot of shows about living in the Alaskan wilderness. Still, for many fans, the Hailstone family on Life Below Zero is the only reality series that shows the true Alaskan experience. The series sees Chip and Agnes Hailstone and their three kids surviving on the Kobuk River in Noorvik.
Here is everything you need to know about Life Below Zero on The National Geographic Channel.
Life Below Zero offers the one true Alaska experience
There have been several shows that have delivered the Alaskan experience in the realm of reality TV over the years. The most famous might be Alaskan Bush People. However, recent seasons of that show moved to Washington after Ami Brown developed cancer and Billy died. Gold Rush also takes place in Alaska and is probably the most successful of all shows that take place in the state.
Add in shows like Deadliest Catch, Alaska: The Last Frontier, Bering Sea Gold, The Last Alaskans, Ice Road Truckers, Yukon Men, and more, and there is a lot to choose from. However, Life Below Zero takes the idea of a family living in the wilderness and is both educational and fun. More so, it seems to be one of the only reality TV shows that doesn’t err on the side of creating drama just for the sake of drama.
One of the biggest complaints about Alaskan Bush People is critics claimed the Brown family didn’t live in the Alaskan wilderness when they weren’t filming. However, with Life Below Zero, the show follows families who live in Alaska’s remote locations full-time. There was even a show that followed indigenous Alaskans called Life Below Zero: First Alaskans. With that said, many fans have gravitated to the Hailstone family.
The Hailstone family on Life Below Zero
Life Below Zero has been airing since 2013, and it focuses on many families living in the remote areas of Alaska. While there are several great characters, such as 60-year-old Sue Aikens who lives alone in the Kavik river camp, it is the Hailstone family that fans have latched onto.
The Hailstone family includes Chip and Agnes Hailstone and their seven children, who live on the Kobuk River in Noorvik, 19 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Agnes is a native Alaskan and Chip was born in Montana before moving up north. This means Agnes is the only member of the main show’s entire cast who has lived in Alaska her entire life.
This makes her someone that fans have fallen in love with.
- “Just started watching and I am on the 3rd season. I am extremely impressed with Agnes and not just her life skills but her parenting skills are amazing!”
- “Agnes, you are amazing and a force to be reckoned with! Thank you for sharing your tribal knowledge and connection to mother earth and all the creatures.”
- “Agnes and Chip are my favorites. She teaches her kids all the knowledge that her parents taught her. She instills their culture with age-old traditions. A lovely family a true Alaskan experience to us the viewer. God bless you all.”

it’s all about the Hailstones & Sue at Kavik. I’ve watched every episode at least two times. Almost makes me want to move to Alaska. But at 81-Year-Old it’s too late for me so I can only watch.
well about the hailstorm, they are not my favorite because if you watch the show you wiill notice that they kill everything they can get there hands on and what bothers me is everyone else says thanks to the animals they kill the hailstorm just go for anything they can get and never say thank you to the animals. I think it’s kinda rude.
