As he told Adams, he became addicted to opiates and heroin after he had surgery to remove a brain tumor when he was 23. The resulting addiction cost him his first marriage and almost cost him his life.

However, he recently celebrated a huge milestone in his sobriety journey.

Inspired By Friends Star Matthew Perry’s Recovery Story

Another person in the public eye who was open about their addiction was Friends star Matthew Perry. His 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, detailed both his stardom from the popular sitcom and his drug addiction.

Sadly, Perry passed away unexpectedly on October 28, 2023. His exact cause of death has yet to be revealed, but many fans are hoping he didn’t relapse before his untimely death.

Many of Matthew Perry’s co-stars have been sharing their experiences with him and mourning his death. But the actor touched more lives than just those in Hollywood. Bachelorette alum Zac Clark recently took part in the “Note to Self” series on CBS Mornings.

Zac Clark Shares Powerful Message On Overcoming Addiction

Zac Clark addressed his letter to his 27-year-old self, the age he was when he hit rock bottom. “Dear 27 year old Zach, I know you hate yourself and you think that everyone hates you,” he started the letter.

The powerful letter continued, “What if I told you that this wasn’t true. Those fears will ultimately become your greatest strength. What if I asked you to hang in there long enough so that other people can love you until you love yourself? Would you believe me? Would you trust me?”

Zac Clark went on to discuss his happy childhood, noting that there was “no reason” he should have become an addict. However, “addiction doesn’t discriminate and it doesn’t care that you had a charmed childhood.”

The Bachelorette alum confessed to dabbling in drugs and alcohol in college, “but it was the opiates you were introduced to at the hospital that changed everything.”

In the letter, Zac Clark shares with his younger self that he will take up running and eventually run several marathons.

He ended the missive by writing that there would be a lot of people to thank for overcoming addiction, but he was giving his younger self “permission to say thank you to one more person: Yourself.”

Without his younger self, Zac Clark wouldn’t be the success he is now.
