RIP Josh Peck Trend Causes Panic, Celebrity Death Hoax?

Fortunately, fans of Josh Peck can rest easy knowing the Nickelodeon star has not passed away. He, however, wasn’t really the victim of a celebrity death hoax either. Turns out, this was simply the case of a mistaken identity that quickly spiraled out of control.

There was a man named Josh who passed away. This caused “RIP Josh” to trend on Twitter. Someone saw the trend and instantly thought it was about Josh Peck. So, they proceeded to post a tribute to Josh Peck. This caused Josh Peck’s name to trend on Twitter as well. In fact, his name was trending right next to “RIP Josh.”

These two statements trending on Twitter at the same time ultimately caused people to panic. A few more people retweeted the original RIP Josh Peck tribute. And, several others reacted to his alleged passing.

The Truth Only Amplified The Trend

Now, it didn’t take long for people to realize Josh was not dead. The damage, however, was already done. The OP of the tweet that started the trend did not take down the original tweet. Instead, they simply left a comment on it apologizing for the mistake. Moreover, people started to tweet about how they panicked when they saw “Josh Peck” and “RIP Josh” trending. Some even simply tweeted they were relieved to learn Josh Peck was no longer dead.

Unfortunately, it was the people tweeting his name and the word “dead” in the same message that was allowing this false news to continue to trend.

Per SportsKeeda, it was a rather large Twitter account that caused this death hoax to explode. Interestingly enough, the account that started the hoax actually claims to be a fan of Josh’s former co-star Drake.

Doing a bit of deep diving on Twitter, the Josh who passed away was actually a quadriplegic who lived in West Virginia. This Josh was a MAGA activist with a huge following. And, his outpour of supporters on Twitter was what caused “RIP Josh” to trend in the first place.

Did you panic when you saw “RIP Josh” and “Josh Peck” trending on Twitter together? Do you understand why this social media trend caused some to panic?
