Maks Chmerkovskiy & Peta Murgatroyd On Baby’s Unique Name
Professional dancers Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd are sharing details about their newborn son — including his unique name.
As TV Shows Ace recently shared, the couple announced the birth of their son over Father’s Day weekend. Now that the family has had some time to settle in, Maks and Peta are proudly introducing their baby to the world.

Maks Chmerkovskiy & Peta Murgatroyd are over the moon
Dancing With The Stars fans felt excitement and anticipation when Maks Chmerkovskiy revealed that he and Peta were at the hospital. He posted a photo on Instagram and revealed that the baby would arrive soon.
Later, Maks revealed that Peta had successfully delivered a healthy son on Father’s Day. At the time, they blurred out the baby’s face in the photo. Now, they’re ready to share more details about the newborn.
The couple decided to give PEOPLE the first look when it came to the baby. The publication has rights to the first newborn photos, which can be viewed on its website.
As for the name, Maks and Peta decided to go with “Rio John Chmerkovskiy.” He was born at 2:06 PM on June 18, 2023.
“We loved Rio, which we came upon at the last minute. It’s a perfect complement to our long surname!” Peta shared with PEOPLE. “We also wanted something easy to say with Shai.”
The couple chose “John” as the middle name to honor Peta’s father, Derek John Murgatroyd. He passed away in December 2022.
In time, Maks and Peta will likely share more photos of baby Rio on their social media channels. Until then, fans will need to stay tuned for more updates on their newborn son.
The dancers are excited about their growing family
Seasoned DWTS fans know that Maks and Peta have been trying to grow their family for quite some time. Over the past year, Peta started opening up about her miscarriages. Before conceiving Rio, the couple even tried IVF which ultimately didn’t work out.
“He is asking me every single day when the baby’s going to be there,” Peta previously told PEOPLE. “I said, ‘Give it a couple of weeks.’ Counting down the days. He’s going to be the best big brother, I know it.”
There is a six-year age gap between Shai and Rio, which is the same age gap between Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy. Fans sincerely hope that Shai and Rio will grow up to be just as close as their father and uncle.
Perhaps the brothers will even become ballroom legends themselves someday.
