Will the Atsushi Ohkubo anime Fire Force be getting a Season 3? Or did something happen to keep the show from coming back after 2020?
Fire Force is the product of one of the most successful new manga writers in Japan, Atsushi Ohkubo. On top of his first hit series, Soul Eater, Fire Force has attracted a large fanbase. The anime got its first season back in 2019. Then the show built an even larger viewership with the second season in 2020. Now it’s been nearly three years since the premiere of Season 2, and there’s still no Season 3. The show was successful with audiences, so what happened? Is Fire Force ever coming back?
Fire Force Season 3: Canceled Or Renewed?
There is still a Fire Force Season 3 in the works according to the official Twitter account of the show. The last concrete news from production is a tweet that is more than a year old at this point, sadly. The translation from Japanese to English essentially tells fans to “Stay tuned” for news about the upcoming season. There’s been a lot of silence about a release window or even just some kind of teaser. But David Production, the studio responsible for the show, is apparently working on it as of writing this.

So why the long wait for Fire Force Season 3? There are likely a couple of reasons. The first and most obvious is COVID. The pandemic threw a wrench in the production cycle of many shows. Season 2 had its finale right at the end of 2020, and 2021 continued heavy lockdown restrictions in Japan.
The other reason is likely source material. Each season of Fire Force has covered about 10 volumes worth of manga material. At the time of Season 2’s finale, the show had covered all but 6 of the volumes that were out then. Ohkubo put out the final volume ending the story in May of last year, giving David Production 14 volumes to either cover in Season 3 or to split into Seasons 3 and 4. That means this could potentially be the final season of Fire Force, but again, there are no concrete details as of writing this.
What Is The Anime Series About?
Fire Force is a fascinating and intense story about a group of people who can control fire in a world that was once engulfed in flames, killing nearly everyone alive. The manga is one of the best-selling of all time with more than 20 million copies sold around the world. It’s a premise that could only be thought up by Atsushi Ohkubo, whose Soul Eater premise was equally as strange and attention-grabbing.
Fire Force Seasons 1 and 2 are both available for streaming on Crunchyroll now. Season 3 has a planned release window of mid-to-late 2024.
