Showtime Cancels Another Show After Merging With Paramount
After Showtime merged with Paramount+, the cable network began axing popular shows. It has just happened again, as Showtime has canceled a fan-favorite show after just two seasons. However, it did announce a new series was coming in its place.
Here is a look at the latest show that Showtime has canceled since its merger with Paramount+.
Showtime cancels another popular show
Showtime merged with Paramount+ and its new name will be Paramount+ with Showtime, putting the emphasis on Paramount over the long-time premium cable mainstay. To follow up this move, the newly rebranded network has started axing fan-favorite shows at a great level.
It all started with the network canceling American Gogolo, Let the Right One In, and Three Women. Both American Gogolo and Let the Right One In had completed one season on Showtime. The strange thing about Three Women was that it hadn’t even aired its first season yet, even though it had finished filming.
Starz ended up picking up Three Women.
This week started with the news that Showtime has now canceled King Shaka, also before it aired its first season. The filming was almost completed and there were only 12 days left on the shoot. Sadly, Showtime shut everything down. However, the biggest show it canceled was Billions, which was one of Showtime’s most prestigious shows. It will end after its seventh season. The L-Word: Generation Q was also canceled after three seasons.
Now, another show has been added to the list. Showtime has canceled Ziwe after two seasons. Ziwe was a satirical late-night talk show hosted and executive produced by comedian Ziwe Fumudoh. She would talk about race, politics, and various other cultural issues. There were also musical numbers, guest stars, and interviews along with comedy sketches.
Ziwe Fumudoh was originally a writer for the late-night talk show Desus & Mero, which ended last year when the duo went their separate ways.
Showtime adds Mandy Patinkin series
Not all the news is bad. After the news that Showtime canceled Ziwe, came the news they added a new series starring Mandy Patinkin (Criminal Intent). This new series is called Seasoned and is a family comedy.
Seasoned is not a new show for the network, but one that was greenlit before the new regime took over. The series is inspired by the life and relationship of Patinkin and his wife, Kathryn Grody. Furthermore, it was co-created by the couple’s sons, Gideon Grody-Patinkin, and Ewen Wright.
According to Paramount Global executive Chris McCarthy, the cancelations and new shows are part of Showtime’s rebranding, to align with three programming groups: franchises, diverse cultures, and antiheroes.
