A new announcement from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World director Edgar Wright promises an anime with the full original cast.
It’s been almost 13 years since the release of the cult-hit comic/manga adaptation of Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley. The movie was initially a box-office bomb, but word of mouth has made it a massive hit since. It helps that the director of the film is Edgar Wright, the British comedy director giant responsible for classics like Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. Now, Scott Pilgrim is back, and the entire main cast from the original movie is coming along.
Scott Pilgrim: The Anime
Edgar Wright made the official announcement on his Twitter account recently. More so, there is an animated series coming called Scott Pilgrim: The Anime. Additionally, the massive star-studded cast is being reassembled to do voicework on the show. Keep in mind, this cast list is a roster of absolutely massive names. Everyone from Michael Cera to Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza to Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, and Kieran Culkin are all returning for this series
It’s nothing short of an amazing feat to see all of these big names coming back for an anime. Edgar Wright will be executive producing the show as well, so essentially all of the original talent is back. This is nothing short of a sequel, or at least a spiritual successor, to the original movie. Lastly, the show is being made for Netflix. As of right now, there aren’t any announcements concerning a release date or release window. Fans can hope for a possible late-2024 release or at least some kind of news in 2024 concerning when the show may be arriving on the platform.
An American Anime
So is this new Scott Pilgrim show an anime? Technically, no. By definition, anime is just any animation made in Japan. The Scott Pilgrim comic sort of gets honorary manga status by it being made in that style. It can even commonly be found in the manga section of American/Canadian bookstores. By extension, Scott Pilgrim: The Anime will likely take on honorary anime status if the anime influence is clearly shown. Both the comic and movie bleed love for manga, video games, and all things nerd culture. Hopefully, Scott Pilgrim: The Anime will be the same.
Scott Pilgrim: The Anime has no official release date as of writing this, but it will be coming to Netflix sometime soon. Are you looking forward to seeing it and what the anime looks like? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
