Blue Lock continues its hot streak with a major announcement for a second season of the anime and its own movie.

2022 hit the world with a surprise anime hit with Blue Lock. The soccer-based anime came out of left field to become one of the most popular shows of the year. More so, the finale for the first season just came out today. Plus, the animation studio, Eight Bit, is not wasting any time announcing more of the show in the near future. Fans now know that sometime in the future there will be not only a second season but also a full-length film. What can viewers expect from the future of the series and this new movie? Let’s talk about it.

Blue Lock Season 2

Season 2 is going to continue the story of the program that seeks to find the greatest striker in Japan. A brief trailer for both the upcoming season and the new movie hit the internet recently. Moreover, the movie has the title Blue Lock -Episode Nagi-. The movie is based on the spin-off manga about the backstory of the titular character Seishiro Nagi.

Blue Lock getting such major announcements so quickly after the end of Season 1 shows how successful it truly has become. The title has gone from a relatively successful manga to a worldwide anime phenomenon in less than a year. Furthermore, the manga’s sales have been going up alongside the show’s success. It is now one of the best-selling manga of all time. The numbers it’s sold, upwards of 24 million copies, has it competing with classics like Parasyte and Gantz. It’s also in a close race with Chainsaw Man to be one of the most successful new manga and anime in the world.

The Most Popular Sports Anime?

The subgenre of sports anime hasn’t had a major hit in some time. Blue Lock not only revives the genre, but it may be sitting at the top after only a short period of time. Its biggest competition is likely Haikyu!!, which at the moment is the highest-selling sports manga ever. The series has sold over 55 million copies, which more than doubles the sales of Blue Lock right now. However, Blue Lock is fairly new and still ongoing, whereas Haikyu!! ended back in 2020. It’s possible that the soccer story could beat the volleyball story given its current rapid upward trajectory.

If the anime creators Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura are anything like their story’s characters, they’ll stop at nothing to reach the top.
