Tyler Walker opens up about coming out to his parents. It almost happened during the Below Deck Season 10 finale. He called his mom and said he had something important to tell her. Then, he got a sign saying that it wasn’t the right moment to come out over the phone.

The newbie stew/deckhand decided to wait until the end of the charter season to do it. He is one of the bravest people to share his story on the show, especially since he comes from a religious upbringing. Tyler knew he wanted to be on the show to tell everyone who he really is.

Coming out on Below Deck Season 10

Tyler Walker wasn’t shy to talk about his family life, upbringing, or sexuality. Aside from chief stew Fraser Olender, Tyler was the other gay man aboard St. David. He immediately connected to Fraser and stew Hayley De Sola Pinto. In his interview with Pride, Tyler admitted that he felt confident about being himself.

His crew members gave him the reassurance to come out to the world. Tyler has no regrets about his time on the show. He also revealed that he looked up to Fraser as a mentor. It’s important to have a role model in the industry that’s not  diverse and accepting of the LGBTQ community.

“I look up to Fraser now. Getting to know him and seeing how confident he is in his position…” Tyler Walker told Pride Magazine. “It really just gave me a sense of self. It’s a really daunting experience. I do come from a very religious background. It really does frighten you.”

In his confessional, he shared that he had a Methodist upbringing. He’s still rooted in his faith, but he knew he was hiding a big secret. Tyler was finally ready to come out to his family. It was something he planned to do upon leaving the boat.

Tyler Walker walked away with that newfound confidence. He can thank his crew members for that. On the show, Fraser recalls coming out to his mom as “one of the most liberating” experiences of his life. Tyler admitted that he hoped for a similar experience, even if it didn’t go as planned.

“I’ve never felt such a weight lifted off my shoulders. I’ve never felt happier with who I am, even though the conversation with my parents maybe didn’t go as smoothly as I would have hoped,” Tyler Walker hared. “They will always love me and they did say that.”

He’s hoping that his story will encourage others to come out and be 100% themselves. What are your thoughts on Tyler Walker coming out to his parents? Would you like to see him return to Below Deck? Sound off below in the comment section.
