Sherri Shepherd’s jail time comes to light
Turns out, there is a side to Sherri Shepherd that fans of her talk show don’t know about. A side involving a criminal history and time behind bars. During a recent interview with Page Six, Sherri admits that she spent some time being locked up before she managed to lock down a successful career in television.
The talk show host, however, doesn’t find her criminal history or time behind bars to be embarrassing. In fact, she considers jail to be a classroom. And, she believes she learned an important life lesson.
She explained: “Yeah, I went to jail for not paying my tickets. At the time I did not think being in jail was a good moment, but looking back I learned to pay all my bills. Jail, that was a classroom… it was a life lesson, and now I pay my bills on time.”
Jail changed her life
In the early 90s, during the very beginning of her career, Sherri ended up behind bars for eight days because she owed $10,000 in moving violations.
Sherri Shepherd recalled: “One of the girls in jail said, ‘Leave Sherri alone because she’s gonna be somebody and we are going to be here for the rest of our lives,’ literally that’s what she used to say.”
Sherri added that the girl’s name was Shelby and she was a guest at both of Sherri’s weddings. The talk show host proceeded to explain that Shelby reminded her that “sometimes people see things in you that you don’t see yourself.” And, she would always remember the words Shelby said to her behind bars: “Sherri is gonna be somebody.”
