Sam Champion Recollects Events From Robin’s Transplant

On Tuesday’s episode, the GMA panelists indulged in a discussion regarding One Match, Second Chance. It is an organization that aided Robin Roberts and saved her life. They match diseases and cancer patients with possible donors to fast-track the treatment. Robin discussed her past medical procedure and revealed that Sam was among the select few that were right by her when she received a transplant.

Just as Robin started to describe the moment, Sam’s eyes started to water and his voice even cracked as he tried to remember that special day. He said, “It was one of those moments where now you kinda feel like it’s gonna be successful. But then you just didn’t know.”

The American weather anchor then talked with Robin about what the doctor joked with her about at the time of her procedure. Sam questioned a smiling Robin, “What did he say when he took that syringe and there was a port in your chest?”

Robin revealed that the doctor injected her with her sister Sally-Ann’s stem cells in the syringe and quipped, “go Sally go!”

He further proposed a toast to Robin with a cider drink on the talk show.

Robin Roberts Thanks Her Sister Sally-Ann For A Precious Gift

Back in 2007, Robin Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer. Five years later, she was also diagnosed with MDS or Myelodysplastic Syndrome. By 2008, she had completed surgery and eight courses of chemotherapy to treat her breast cancer. For her bone-marrow disease, she received a bone marrow transplant from her sister Sally-Ann in 2012.

Talking about her life-saving transplant, she said, “10 years ago… I was waking up in the hospital after receiving a life-saving bone marrow transplant from my loving sister, Sally-Ann. Now, more people than ever can be helped by that procedure and there are new and innovative ways to do them.”

After her diagnosis, Robin Roberts took a break from GMA in October 2012 for her treatment. She returned on February 20, 2013, and thanked her sister for the precious gift of life. Since then, Robin has used the GMA platform to raise awareness regarding the stem cell register as seen on the talk show’s YouTube clip.
