‘The Masked Singer’ Offers Sneak Peek Of First Performances
The Masked Singer returns to Fox this week for Season 9. With the return only one night away, Fox released a sneak peek look at one of the first performances – a spot-on performance of a Whitesnake classic rock song.
Here is a look at one of the first performances of the new season and what fans can expect from the show.
The Masked Singer offers sneak peek
The Masked Singer Season 9 premieres on Wednesday night, February 15, on Fox. The first night will see three new costumed singers competing for the grand prize at the season’s end. These contestants are Mustang, Gnome, and Medusa. None of these are the costumes the show promoted in its previews.
The same panelists return this season with Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke, and Jenny McCarthy. However, with the format changes from last season, they became nothing more than talking heads as the guessing game meant nothing anymore.
This first night sees the three singers performing, and Mustang proved to be very talented. She sang the Whitesnake classic “Here I Go Again” and it was obvious that she was a professional singer by trade. Last season ended with a battle between Wilson Phillips and Amber Riley, and the talent is clearly still heavy this season.
The Masked Singer format remains the same
Sadly, the new season of The Masked Singer will keep the same format from the last season. This has three singers compete each week with two of them going home at the end of each night. The singer who wins will have to get through three weeks of competition to move on to the semi-finals.
This takes away one of the best parts of the show – the guessing game. For the first seven seasons, fans could debate who the singers were as they performed week after week. Only one person went home each week and it made it a fun talking point for fans between episodes.
That is lost now. There is only one person to even care about guessing the identity of each week and they might end up gone the next week. With this format, fans only get one chance to connect with a challenger. They could end up eliminated before ever getting a chance to win the audience over.
It does give the reality competition series a chance to have a lot more contestants each season, but there is a chance the well will soon run dry on celebrities and costume ideas. However, there is one change this season that will make things interesting – the panelists can save one singer per group if they like them enough.
