Lifetime’s latest Ripped From The Headlines movie is Gwen Shamblin’: Starving For Salvation. This is based on a true story.

Gwen Shamblin: Starving For Salvation stars Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing, Grey’s Anatomy) and Vincent Walsh (Billy The Kid, Played).

Gregory Small (Wrath: A Seven Deadly Sins Story, The Gabby Petito Story), and Richard Blaney (Secrets Of A Marine’s Wife, V.C. Andrews’ Landry Family) wrote the script, with John L’Ecuyer (Merry Swissmas, The Detectives) directing.

What Is Lifetime’s Gwen Shamblin: Starving For Salvation About?

According to The Futon Critic, Gwen Shamblin Lara (Grey) is a “controversial religious leader and Christian diet guru who positioned herself as God’s prophet and preached the virtues of being thin.”

Gwen was the founder of the Tennessee-based Remnant Fellowship Church and the Weigh Down Workshop. This organization was a successful Christian-based diet program. This program promoted the “virtue of a slim waist and the power of prayer for weight loss.”

Soon, Gwen’s church expanded across all the United States. She accumulated a lot of power and money, and led the church with an “iron-fisted grip as its leader.” Moreover, she created a persona that was considered “larger-than-life.” This included her physical presence, with her big, blonde, teased hair.

Her power and ego became so big that she told church members to abandon anyone in their lives who were not members of the church. Also, she banished those who became overweight.

Worst of all, she threatened legal action against anyone who left the church or threatened to reveal anything about the church. She also “advocated for strict punishment of those who failed to follow church tenets.”

However, it all ended tragically. In May 2021, Gwen, her husband Joe, and others died in a plane crash that Joe piloted. It happened soon after takeoff.
