Fans are wondering why John Legend is leaving The Voice after so many seasons on the singing competition reality series. While his reasons for leaving make sense, there is some good news for fans who love the long-time coach.

Here is why Legend is leaving and what is next for the singer/songwriter.

Why is John Legend leaving The Voice?

John Legend spoke to Entertainment Tonight about leaving The Voice after Season 22 ended. However, he also left fans with some good news about his departure from the show. Right around the season finale, NBC announced a huge shakeup for the singing competition series. NBC announced that Camila Cabello would leave after one season and Gwen Stefani’s return was only temporary, as well. Also, John Legend will be leaving. Replacing them is a returning Kelly Clarkson and newcomers Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan.

Meanwhile, Season 23 is Blake Shelton’s last season on the show. He announced before the season even started that he was going to depart after two more turns in the coach’s chair. He has served on every single season of The Voice since it started and holds the record for the most wins. However, Kelly Clarkson has the better winning percentage at 50% of her seasons bringing her the trophy.

As for Legend, the reason he departed the show is all about timing. “My family’s growing, I have a new album out, I’m ‘gonna do a little bit of touring, and so it’s probably better that I take a break,” he said. However, he capped it off with the news that he will return to The Voice – just not this next season. That means he might, like Kelly Clarkson last season, just take a one-year break and then come back the next season when the show needs a replacement for Blake Shelton.

John Legend’s tenure on The Voice

John Legend joined The Voice in Season 16 and has been there ever since. The show was fairly consistent for much of that time. Kelly Clarkson served as a coach from Season 14 through Season 21. Blake Shelton had been there since Season 1. That means that from Season 16 through Season 21, Blake, Kelly, and John were on the show together. The fourth chair was mostly a rotating one with coaches coming and going.

However, Legend was never as successful as the other two long-running coaches. Kelly Clarkson won four of her eight seasons, giving her a 50% winning percentage. As for Blake, he has won nine times. However, he only won three times since Kelly joined the show, including this past season with Bryce Letherwood.

However, John Legend only won once in his seven seasons on the show, and that was his first year when he led Maelyn Jarmon to the title. Maybe taking a break will help John find what he had in his debut season.
