Below Deck producers share the secrets behind shocking moments. The franchise is about more than just rich people who enjoy expensive yachting trips. It also follows a group of crew members who work, fight, and party together. The producers don’t interfere with the crew members to ensure the best drama potential.
Is Below Deck scripted?
Courtland Cox spoke to BravoTV.com about the Below Deck franchise. It was hard to get yachties on board with the show when they started casting for the first season. Most of the yachting industry was hesitant to be associated with a reality show at the time. It made its debut on Bravo in 2013 and went on to air 10 seasons.
“Initially, it was very hard to get yacht crew members to commit to doing the show because it was an unknown entity,” Courtland told BravoTV.com. “People didn’t know what Below Deck was.”
However, Below Deck producers claim they have no say in casting. They vet the charter passengers. They go through an interview procedure. Producers also claim they have no influence over how the charter guests act on the show.
Most shocking moments happened unscripted
Courtland claims some of the most shocking moments on Below Deck were completely unscripted. They don’t have any involvement with the drama that goes on. Most of the things that happened, took place in real-time. There is no time to edit scenes or reshoot them like with other reality shows.
“That’s the kind of thing that keeps me from coming back to the show,” Courtland explained to the outlet. “Every season, there are fix or six moments that so completely engage me and so suck me in that I’m like, ‘This is why Below Deck is an amazing show that you can’t do anywhere else.'”
Other shocking moments include Ashton Pieannar almost going overboard in Season 6. At that moment, a cameraman broke the fourth wall to jump into the water and save his life.
