Rick and Morty is one of the most popular cartoons of the last decade. With a concept that encapsulates an infinite multiverse like its nothing, the franchise potential is limitless. Something the creators are very aware of and have made references to within the show. It should come as no surprise that we’re finally getting our first taste of Rick and Morty splintering off into a full franchise. A fun short from a couple of years ago is becoming its own full show. And the first season now has official confirmation to arrive in 2023.
The Anime Continues
The whole thing began with Rick and Morty vs. Genocider. A novel short from 2020 done by Japanese anime studio Telecom Animation. The short even utilizes the voice actors who do the voices of Rick and Morty in the Japanese dub of the show. It was an interesting concept that went viral on the internet. The official upload of the short on Adult Swim’s YouTube channel is sitting at nearly 10 million views as of today. So it’s no shock that the success of such an idea is now resulting in a full Season 1 of Rick and Morty: The Anime.
The full season has the same director as the short, Takashi Sano. It will be about Rick and Morty, but not the versions we follow in the main series. This will be alternate universe versions of the characters. Japanese-speaking versions, apparently. Therein lies the infinite potential of this franchise. The idea that any number of shows can be greenlit using the same characters, just alternate universe versions, and fans will still love it. At least, they’ll probably love it, if the success of the Genocider short is any indication.
Rick and Morty Continues To Expand
On top of Rick and Morty: The Anime, we also got the official confirmation that we’ll be getting Season 7 of the main series in 2023 as well. That was no guarantee before, seeing as large delays have hit in between seasons of the show in the past. But it seems like the crew are in a rhythm at the moment and we’re getting more Rick and Morty than ever. All of this information came about as the result of a Variety interview with the head of Adult Swim, Michael Ouweleen. The interview has many fans excited as it seems like Adult Swim’s lineup for 2023 is very exciting.
Rick and Morty: The Anime is coming to Adult Swim in 2023. Season 6 of the main series is airing its finale this Sunday.
