The Real Reason Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ Was So Popular
Netflix’s Korean drama series Squid Game was among the most successful shows on the streamer when it premiered on September 17, 2021. The show had around 1.65 Billion hours viewed in the initial 28 days of its release on the streaming platform. But why was Squid Game the most successful series on the streaming platform? Was it because of the story, the cast, or something else? Let us decode the same.
Netflix Awards Squid Game’s Success To Its Binge-Watching Model
The streaming platform proposes that a big credit for Squid Game’s success goes to its binge-watching model. This is the primary reason Hwang Dong-hyuk’s series quickly ranked as the most popular series on the platform. As per CBR.com, a new letter from Netflix’s shareholder credited the South Korean show’s record-breaking success to its streaming model.

The letter from the streaming giant’s third-quarter earnings calls states, “It’s hard to imagine, for example, how a Korean title like Squid Game would have become a mega hit globally without the momentum that came from people being able to binge it. We believe the ability for our members to immerse themselves in a story from start to finish increases their enjoyment but also their likelihood to tell their friends, which then means more people watch, join and stay with Netflix.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk Announces Squid Game Season 2
The series enjoys the top ranks despite the fact that Stranger Things Season 4 has racked up the most minutes of a season viewed within one week of its premiere. However, with Squid Game Season 2 soon to arrive, it might give the first season a run for its money. The series’ director/writer Hwang Dong-hyuk is already working hard on the upcoming installment.

Hwang gave more insights about the new series and stated that it will feature new thrilling games with interesting plot twists. He teased, “All I’ll say is there are going to be new games, even better games than the first season, that await.”
Netflix Announces Squid Game Reality Competition Spinoff
Netflix officially announced the renewal of Squid Game Season 2 in June 2022. However, the director had already teased back in 2021 that he had already started working on the framework for the upcoming season. Moreover, Netflix’s chief content officer and co-CEO Ted Sarandos also hinted that “The Squid Game universe had just begun.”

The franchise also announced that it will soon include a reality competition show produced by Netflix based on the series. This spinoff will bring on board 456 contestants that will compete against one another for a whopping $4.56 million. This is the which is the highest amount to date in the history of TV reality shows.
Subscribers that haven’t yet watched the first season of the series can check it out on the streaming platform. As of now, Squid Game Season 2 doesn’t have any official release date.
