For many fans, Blade Runner was a classic one-off sci-fi movie from the ’80s. Who would have thought we’d get all of the developments in Ridley Scott’s universe that we have now? Amazon has greenlit a limited series titled Blade Runner 2099 for their Prime Video streaming platform. That title puts the series a whole half-century after the last main installment of the franchise Blade Runner 2049. So what will this series bring us? How many of the cast and crew from the first two films are coming back? We have all the details we know so far here.
Blade Runner 2099
The show is extremely early in production right now, and as such we don’t have any names of the lead actors. Yet, we do know the name of the showrunner along with some of the writers who are on board for Blade Runner 2099. The showrunner is Silka Luisa. A relatively new name to Hollywood but best known for her writing work on shows like Halo and Shining Girls. A new name like hers being the showrunner may give fans some hesitations. However, it may also be comforting to know that Ridley Scott is on board as executive producer.
Scott, of course, is the director of the first film, which is based on the novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. Scott is a cornerstone of science fiction cinema and it’s always good to have his insight into something like this. It is unknown at this time if Denis Villeneuve, the director of Blade Runner 2049, has any involvement.
The most concerning detail right now is the lack of Hampton Fancher’s name on this upcoming Blade Runner project. Hampton Fancher is the co-writer for the scripts of both Blade Runner films. That makes him arguably the cornerstone of the franchise thus far, and his lack of presence on this new series right now could be telling. He may sign on to become involved in the future, though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Prime Video Comes For The Crown
Amazon is quickly coming up from behind to become one of the top streaming platforms in the world right now. The Rings Of Power is quite literally a power move like no other. Its premiere got the highest streaming numbers that Prime video has ever gotten, so they may end up getting their fortune’s worth out of this series after all. Combine that with so many other new adaptations coming down the pipeline, along with new seasons of already hit shows like The Boys and Invincible, and Prime Video may have just set itself up to be the biggest streamer in the world.
There is no official release window for Blade Runner 2099 as of yet. The earliest estimates put the show’s premiere at around late 2023 to early 2024.
