Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the newest Netflix original series that has high anticipations surrounding it. And along with those anticipations comes more than a few fears and wary customers. Cyberpunk 2077 is the game that never hit even close to the expectations those set for it. It’s considered one of the biggest gaming flops in the history of the industry. So why would they make a show about it? Well, the world is still vibrant, dangerously mysterious, and interesting. There’s a lot to explore outside of what we see in the game.
So does it exceed the game’s ruined reputation? Or does it exist in squalor along with the CD Projekt Red creation? The critics and fans alike have had their say.
An Unexpected Powerhouse
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners appears to be an astounding success for both Netflix and the video game franchise. It’s currently sitting at a %100 critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the user scores being just a few points shy of that 100. A reviewer for Forbes has this to say about the show:
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a phenomenal series, taking the potential of CDPR’s Night City and running wild with it in a gory, sexy, strangely sad, and compelling action series that I would recommend to absolutely anyone (uh, anyone over 18, that is).”
The show takes the best part of the failed Cyberpunk 2077 video game, the world, and expands on it in amazing and action-filled ways. One of the main negatives to the show may just be how much worse the game will seem in comparison to the beautiful animation and feel of this series. The success of Season 1 may even lead CD Projekt Red to attempt to implement characters or features from the show into their own game (Or the sequel that’s apparently happening) in the future. And even if you’ve never played Cyberpunk 2077, you don’t have to in order to enjoy this brilliant TV.
The Future Of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
So does this success mean we’re for sure getting a new season of the hit show? It’s a bit too early to tell at this point. Netflix has a bad history of canceling shows with critical acclaim for lacking the viewership they seem to prefer (Sense8, The Get Down, and American Vandal being notorious examples). Hopefully, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners can gain enough traction to warrant Netflix keeping the show going. But with them infamously slashing their animation department earlier this year, it may take a miracle for us to see a Season 2.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 1 is out on Netflix right now in its entirety. A Season 2 has yet to get an announcement.
