TV and movie adaptations of video game properties are generally met with skepticism in the gaming community. It’s no surprise why. Time and time again since the ’90s we’ve gotten terrible, unfaithful attempts at adapting our favorite characters. Netflix is promising to be the exception with their upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. And they have a good track record to back it up. The first trailer for the flashy, sci-fi anime came out recently. Here are some of the important details worth noting.

The trailer is out now on Youtube and it definitely looks promising even to the staunchest Cyberpunk hater. And there are a lot of Cyberpunk haters out there. Prior to the game’s release in 2020, the game had built a strong following off speculation and brand loyalty alone. The developers, CD Projekt Red, had a spectacular reputation from The Witcher trilogy. This led fans to believe that the studio could do no wrong, and they came up with nothing but disappointment. Cyberpunk 2077 came out so broken that Playstation had to remove the game from its store entirely and refund all of its customers.

So the fact they’re even doing an adaptation for a game with such a tarnished reputation is surprising. But the world of Cyberpunk does have a lot of potential. And this trailer capitalizes on that to the fullest extent. We get to see Night City, lightning-fast action, and a beautifully vibrant art style.

The animation studio behind Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is Studio Trigger. They have a history with popular shows like Kill La Kill and Little Witch Academia. They even did an episode for the popular Disney+ anime Star Wars Visions. So it seems as though the anime has a lot going for it. The premise is that it’s about a poor street kid who becomes a mercenary to try and survive in the dystopian technological city of the future that is Night City.

Netflix, Anime, & Video Games

As mentioned before, Netflix’s reputation with video game TV adaptations does give them extra credibility. The Castlevania series stands alone as possibly the best video game TV show ever made. It’s sitting at a %94 rating on Rotten Tomatoes with adoration from both newcomers and longtime fans of the franchise. So it’s clear that Netflix has the ability to bring in talent that can bring the Cyberpunk world to life. And hopefully, the full first season can live up to the lofty thrills met in its brief trailer.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premieres on Netflix this September. The specific date is not yet known.
