Fullmetal Alchemist has been one of the most powerful and lucrative anime franchises for nearly the entire 21st century. It’s no surprise that the title has been branching out into live-action films recently. The first live-action film came out back in 2017, although the reception wasn’t too positive overall. Still, the movie has its fans, and clearly, Netflix has an interest in giving those fans more of what they want. Fans are getting not just one, but two more live-action FMA films this year to complete the trilogy. The first one, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge Of Scar, came out back in May and got marginally better reviews than the original. Now we have the release date for Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Transmutation, the last in the trilogy.
The Final Transmutation
Netflix has recently taken in an interest in both live-action anime adaptations, as well as this strange format of quickly releasing trilogies. Last year the horror community got a pleasant surprise with the Fear Street trilogy. Three fun and bloody slasher films that all came out a matter of weeks apart. This FMA trilogy has a bit more of a gap, considering there was five years between the first and the second entries. But now the gap between the second and third will be just over a month.
September 24th is the official release date that Netflix has given for the upcoming third film. Granted, the full trilogy has already come out in Japan, where the movies got theatrical releases over the summer. But fans in the US will have to continue the wait for the third entry until September, which as of right now has the best reviews of any of the movies in the trilogy.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a unique steampunk story set in the version of the world mid-Industrial Revolution that is dominated by alchemy. The manga is one of the highest-selling of all time at over 80 million copies, and the anime adaptation Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is considered one of the best anime series of all time by many.
Even More Fullmetal Alchemist?
This resurgence in FMA popularity has fans wondering if we’ll ever get another anime series in the future. There’s no confirmation of anything like that at the moment, and the original series covered all of the manga volumes that we have as of right now. The story’s author, Hiromu Arakawa, is currently working on another critically-acclaimed manga, Daemons Of The Shadow Realm. The first volume of that will release in the US in early 2023, and considering the popularity of both the manga and the author it is very likely that an anime adaptation will be close behind.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Transmutation is landing on Netflix September 24th. The second movie in the trilogy, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge Of Scar, is out on Netflix now.
