Strictly Come Dancing is the British counterpart to the US show, Dancing With The Stars. In the past, both shows shared Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman, and even a few of the pro dancers. But the pandemic and excessive travel forced most of them to choose one show over the other.

Several DWTS fans also enjoy and follow Strictly as well. The newest lineup is already out for Strictly with confirmed celebrity contestants. But one last-minute addition has a lot of viewers utterly confused — but perhaps a little delighted too.

Strictly Come Dancing adds someone interesting to the lineup

It’s always exciting to hear the latest cast lists for Strictly and DWTS. But a recent announcement from BBC Three has a lot of viewers puzzled about the newest series.

This year, it seems as if Strictly Come Dancing is adding a fictional character to the cast list. BBC Three recently confirmed that Nessa from Gavin & Stacey will compete this year. Actress Ruth Jones plays the character on the show.

“‘Oh! What’s occurring?’ Nessa is bringing Barry Island to the ballroom as the 20th celebrity contestant confirmed for #Strictly 2022,” BBC Three recently shared on Twitter.

Several Strictly followers believe that the tweet is a joke. But others aren’t quite so sure. The Sun later confirmed that the Tweet was intended to be a joke after all. The BBC Three account replied to their own tweet and joked that their “hand slipped.”

So it doesn’t appear as if a fictional character will compete on Strictly Come Dancing this year after all. But it’s definitely an interesting concept that could be explored in the future.

The British dance show permanently loses one of its judges

Many Strictly Come Dancing fans really miss Bruno Tonioli behind the judges’ table. The Italian dancer was a staple of the program for many years until he permanently chose Dancing With The Stars this year. The pandemic initially made it too difficult for Bruno to go back and forth between Los Angeles and London so often. But now, he just prefers to stay in one place for filming.

“I just couldn’t do the flying anymore,” the 66-year-old told The Daily Mail. “I don’t know how I survived that schedule. To be honest, it’s a miracle.”

He added that there wasn’t any bad blood between himself and the rest of Strictly. It was just a matter of logistics. The pandemic made international travel difficult, but Bruno was also just tired of the rigorous schedule.

Strictly Come Dancing Series 20 premieres on BBC One starting September 10. Dancing With The Stars launches on Disney+ on September 19, just a little over a week later.
