'American Pickers' Collector Reveals Why Mike Wolfe Gasped

A collector from American Pickers revealed why Mike Wolfe gasped. The moment took place in an episode filmed in February. The collector is now sharing her experience with filming the show. Mary Stander has been antiquing for decades in Lafayette, Louisiana. In a recent episode of the series, some of her valuables were shown to the dedicated fans.

Mary filmed that episode earlier this year. She invited viewers into her house on West Saint Mary Boulevard. The camera crew and cast members looked at her impressive collection. Even Mike couldn’t help himself and gasped at what he found.

Mary Stander shares her experience on the History Channel series

The American Pickers crew spent the whole day filming. Mike Wolfe and a dozen crew members showed up at her house early in the morning and stayed there until midnight. They were on the hunt for some of the country’s most valuable collectibles. Mary spoke to The Advocate Acadiana about her experience with the popular reality series.

“It was really nice to see them gasp when they’d walk into a room and be as thrilled as they were with the things that they were seeing… From the moment they turned into my driveway until they left and said bye-bye, was my favorite time of the day.”

The American Pickers crew couldn’t cover her entire collection. It was so massive that it couldn’t fit the entire episode. Mary shared that her love for antiquing was ignited from the trips she made with her mom ever since she was 13 years old. The 70-year-old loved the unique finds and the stories behind them.

“[I love] the history behind each and every piece, the things that those things could tell us about the people that they knew,” Mary explained. “When something is 200 years old or 150 years old, it’s a treasure.”

Mary has amassed a massive collection over the past decades. She admitted that the American Pickers crew only got a glimpse at it. They would need a few more days of filming to cover everything. The cast members only focused on the items that intrigued them the most.

They ended up buying around 20 collectibles. It was thrilling for Mary to meet with other antique enthusiasts. Mary admitted that she “needed that boost” more than the money. She started her own antique store in the ’90s, but she closed it and moved the collections to her home.

“When I’d open my garage people would say, ‘Oh my God!’ You need to call American Pickers for years,” she said. “I hope their eyes sparkle a little bit when they see my treasures.”
