Shania Twain’s new Netflix documentary, Just A Girl, chronicles her entire life. This includes her childhood in Ontario, the heartbreaking loss of her parents, taking care of her siblings, and then becoming a superstar.

Included in this in-depth documentary is her “intense” love life and heartbreak. However, this story was years in the making.

Shania Twain’s First Marriage To Mutt Lange

In the Netflix documentary, Just A Girl, Shania opens up about her love life. This started back in 1993, Shania had released her first album and was starting to make a name for herself. Enter Robert John “Mutt” Lange. He is a Zambian-born, record producer and composer.

The producer was long considered the “sixth man” of the hugely successful metal band, Def Leppard, creating their sound and co-writing a few songs. The now 73-year-old was also famous at that time for working with AC/DC.

It turns out, he loved country music and in 1993 contacted Twain. He heard her first album and wanted to work with her. The two spent six months talking on the phone before actually meeting in person.

Therefore, to the rest of the world, it seemed like an unusual match when it was announced that they married in December 1993.

Lange was also instrumental in her successful rise. Along with Shania, Mutt co-wrote and produced some of her biggest hits such as “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “You’re Still The One,” and “Any Man of Mine.”

When she was not touring, the very private couple lived in Switzerland, near Montreux. In August 2001, the couple had their only child, a son named Aja.

Their lives seemed idyllic, cultivating bliss and creating music. That is, until the shocking announcement in May, 2008, that the couple was separated.

Mutt Lange Had Affair With Shania’s Best Friend

While relationships can break up, Shania Twain’s 17-year marriage ended with a double betrayal. According to Women’s Health, via Yahoo, her then-husband, Mutt Lange, and an affair with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud.

Marie-Anne was not only her best friend, but she also ran the couple’s 46-room Swiss Chateau and would babysit Aja when Shania had to go on the road.

How did Shania find out? Marie-Anne’s husband, Frédéric Thiébaud. He discovered the affair after uncovering the usual suspects: Hotel receipts, phone records, and some revealing lingerie.

He confronted the deceiving couple and told them to tell Twain. They did not. Therefore, he did tell her. She resisted his news. She could not believe it was true.

However, she learned that the deception was real. Moreover, Frédéric and Shania commiserated on their shared grief and soon found themselves in love. Shania divorced Lange in 2010, after 17 years of marriage.

Shania divorced Lange in 2010. Subsequently, she and businessman Frédéric married in Puerto Rico, on January 1, 2011, and they have not looked back.
