‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant Name Sets Off Disruption In Viewers Homes

As Jeopardy! viewers tuned in to watch the game on Tuesday night, something weird caught their attention. An uncanny tech mishap, not on the game show’s set, but at Jeopardy! viewers’ home has viewers spooked. But, what is this tech mishap? To find out more, read along.

Ken Jennings & Mayim Bialik Dubbed Jeopardy! Permanent Hosts

In the latest of the game show’s revelations, both Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings have closed deals to host the show for Season 39. Ken hosted the July 26 show and will close out the currently airing season slated to end this week. Starting in the fall, both Mayim and Ken will share hosting duties as the upcoming season’s permanent host.

The Jeopardy! alum bagged the 2022 Tournament of Champions hosting gig where the top players from the game show return. As per The Sun, the tournament is opening the season’s initial four months. On the other hand, Mayim will host as much as she can after the Tournament of Champions ends.

Fans Freaked Out By ‘Alexa’ Technical Glitch On Tuesday’s Show

However, last night, something else worried fans as they tuned in to watch the game show. Contestant Ed Coulson, who won $40K in total, competed against Alexa Jacob and Mark Stover. Although Alexa, an electrical engineer from Queens, New York, didn’t win the game, she managed to become a household name in a literal sense.

Like the popular Amazon device, her first name is Alexa which became a big problem for viewers that own one. Several viewers flocked to Twitter to complain that their Amazon Echo speakers were flipping out during the entirety of the game so. The speakers even started responding to Jeopardy! trivia questions.

Voicing their concern, a user wrote on Twitter, “There’s a Jeopardy contestant tonight named Alexa, and it keeps triggering our Alexa.”

Another chimed in, “One of the contestants on Jeopardy! today is named Alexa, and our ‘Alexa’ is going nuts.”

A third lamented, “Every time Kennings says ‘Alexa,’ my echo is activated.”

A fourth added, “Omg. Watching Jeopardy! and one of the contestants’ names is Alexa. Every floor of my house is freaking out anytime @KenJennings calls her name!”

Another requested, “Hey @Jeopardy, please no more contestants named Alexa. You keep setting off my smart speaker. #FirstWorldProblems.”

Contestant Alexa Jacob Responds To Twitter Complaints

Given the inflow of tweets, even Amazon’s tech support buzzed in on the issue, responding to a viewer:

“Hello! We’re sorry for this inconvenience! If needed, you could temporarily mute your Alexa device.”

Even the contestant herself posted a response on Twitter stating, “Thank you all for the well wishes tonight! Also, if you’re complaining that your Amazon device was set off tonight- I can’t do much about that!”

The night after this tech mishap, fans finally learned who the game show’s permanent host would be. EP Mike Davies shared a statement on Jeopardy! ‘s official website on July 27. The announcement confirmed that both Mayim and Ken would share the hosting duties as permanent hosts.

  2. I just love Jeopardy, period, no matter who the host is. I like Ken and Myam as permanent hosts.

  3. This is the second generation of this happening.

    The first was when someone clapping on TV would activate a viewer’s home Clapper!

  4. M very pleased with this host decision and I hope this puts an end to all the drama. Both are excellent.
