If Disney has Marvel and HBO has DC, Amazon is looking to take everything else. They want to corner the market on all comic book adaptations that don’t belong to their primary streaming competitors. Already they have The Boys and Invincible, two of the most popular comic book shows of the last 10 years. Not to mention the too often forgotten The Tick. All of those shows have a huge amount of critical and fan acclaim. And it looks like Amazon is going for another with the newest rights they’ve bought for adaptation: Eight Billion Genies.
Eight Billion Genies
Eight Billion Genies is a comic by author Charles Soule and artist Ryan Browne. Charles Soule is a rising comics star who is fresh off of a fantastic run of Daredevil comics for Marvel. What’s interesting about Amazon buying Eight Billion Genies is that it’s an incredibly new story. The first issue just came out in May of this year. As of writing this, there are only two issues out of a planned eight-issue run. But it seems as though Amazon already has big plans for the story.
Eight Billion Genies is a story about, well… eight billion genies, believe it or not. More specifically, what if eight billion genies suddenly appeared to everyone on earth and gave them all one wish? As you can maybe guess, some grand-scale chaos begins to ensue. The comic is extremely new, but already highly successful. Both issues out right now have been met with critical and commercial acclaim.
Right now, Prime Video’s plans seem to be set on a movie adaptation for the short-run comic. Obviously, those plans are still in very early stages, so no further details have come to the surface. But, assuming the movie’s success, we can certainly expect more out of the franchise. The premise of Eight Billion Genies certainly lends itself to a wide variety of stories that could be told. Both Charles Soule and Ryan Browne are set to be executive producers on the upcoming adaptation
The Future Of Amazon Prime Video
Amazon has gargantuan plans for the future of its Prime Video streaming platform. The biggest thing in the near future is, without a doubt, their upcoming Lord Of The Rings series. A prequel series that intends to flesh out the massive world of C.S. Lewis’ invention. Beyond that, Invincible Season 2 is the primary thing on the minds of many Prime Video viewers. Sadly, there are no announcements regarding that show as of right now. Hopefully, some good news is just around the corner.
Eight Billion Genies is coming sometime in the distant future. Expect announcements on the cast and creative team within the next year.
