Why ‘When Calls The Heart’s’ Rosemary & Leland Had To Have A Baby
The When Calls The Heart Season 9 finale, “Rock, A Bye, Baby” offered a lot of spectacular moments. One of them was when Lee (Kavan Smith) found out he was going to be a father. This is something he and Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) have wanted for many seasons of the Hallmark series.
However, there was another option. Why did they choose to go in this direction? WCTH co-creator, Brian Bird, recently shared why.
Could Rosemary & Leland Adopted On When Calls The Heart?
Recently, When Calls The Heart creator, Brian Bird, was a guest on the JLJ Media vlog on YouTube. One of the major discussions in the writer’s room was how they were going to give the Coulters a family.
When you set up a storyline about infertility, you have to pay it off somehow.
And we knew that ultimately we had to get there. There was some thought about, ‘Well maybe they adopt.’ So we played with that a little bit… So that was a possibility and that would’ve been a very heartwarming kind of story to tell.
Therefore, the writers did consider a Coulter adoption. But, why did they go with a pregnancy instead?

Series Could Have Gone To Brookfield
In a previous season of When Calls The Heart, the Coulters went to Brookfield, which is the When Hope Calls town. One of the main stories in this WCTH spinoff is the orphanage.
Could the Coulters have adopted instead? Brian Bird agreed “that was a possibility.”
However, it was Pascale Hutton’s acting talent that made the writers go in the direction that they did. Bird based it on Hutton’s own motherhood journey. He felt that in the final episode, we saw it all in her beautiful, emotional performance. “You know, one of the things about Pascale is that she’s such a great momma in real life, that boy did you see momma show up…”
Bird then described how much emotion was in Pascale’s performance when she hoped that she was finally pregnant.
And those eyes, and that consternation that she had as she’s going through the process of hoping, praying it could be true, but having been disappointed so much in the past. You saw her cycle through all that as a human being… Rosemary had all the feels there, all the emotions that she went through. That to me was just, so, one of the great arcs of the season… She got to play a lot of flavors there with that.
There Will Be Time Jump For When Calls The Heart Season 10
Although When Calls The Heart has not been officially renewed for Season 10, we already know that there will be a time jump. However, we will still see Rosemary pregnant. It will be in her final pregnancy trimester.
