ABC sets game show returns, Millionaire canceled?

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire has been an ABC staple since its 1999 premiere. Regis Philbin was the host of the original prime-time version until 2002. At the show’s highest point, it was so popular that it aired two nights a week.

Former The View co-host Meredith Vieira led the daily syndicated version of Millionaire from 2002 until 2013. Her replacements over the years included comic Cedric the Entertainer, actor Terry Crews, and Bachelor host Chris Harrison.

In 2020, the network revamped Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with a new host, Jimmy Kimmel, and celebrity contestants. The reboot wasn’t a huge hit with viewers. Has the show been canceled again?

In January of this year, Deadline reported that the game show was “parked” until further notice. While not outright canceled, it doesn’t appear on ABC’s summer or fall schedules.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire exposed

Most game shows have a 30-minute TV timeslot. That means a lot of stuff ends up on the cutting room floor. A former Millionaire contestant spilled some behind-the-scenes tea that viewers at home might not know.

If contestants don’t know an answer, they have the option to phone a friend, remove 2 of the 4 answers, or poll the audience for the correct response. However, at-home viewers might notice that the audience often gives the incorrect answer. Why?

The game show insider revealed the reason to The Sun. The outlet reports that the studio audience can purposely steer the poll results to the incorrect answer. Why would they do that?

Well, it turns out that game shows film multiple episodes in the same day. For Millionaire, that means the friends and family of other possible contestants fill up the audience.

A contestant is in the ‘hot seat’ until they answer incorrectly. Guests of the contestants give the wrong answer to help vacate the ‘hot seat’ for the next contestant.

Game show fans find backstage details fascinating. Jeopardy! viewers recently spotted an editing issue.

In another expose to The Sun, a former X Factor contestant claims that bad singers purposely make it onto the show. The wannabe contestant further revealed that the singers don’t initially go before the celebrity judges. Instead, they perform for other judges first.
