‘AGT’ Under Fire With OSHA, Serious Federal Violations?
AGT is under fire by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The production received two serious violations. This comes after former contestant Jonathan Goodwin ended up with paralysis after his near-fatal stunt accident. As TV Shows Ace previously reported, Goodwin shared an update with his followers on social media.
The one-time stuntman ended up in a wheelchair from a 30-foot fall. Goodwin’s stunt took place earlier this year on America’s Got Talent. Now, NBC and the show will have to deal with violations from OSHA. Read on to learn more about Goodwin’s accident and the violations.
OSHA issues violations against AGT
OSHA issued a statement to The Sun on Friday, May 13. They said they sent AGT “two serious violations.” OSHA conducted an investigation into Goodwin’s accident. The federal agency shared the following statement:
“OSHA has completed the investigation into this horrific incident involving Marathon Productions, Inc. and issued a citation on April 13, 2022 for two Serious violations.”
The accident took place on the set of AGT in October 2021. It took place during the NBC spinoff, America’s Got Talent Extreme’s rehearsals, in Georgia. The near-fatal accident left him paralyzed.
OSHA’s report found that “an employee was exposed to a fall hazard of approximately 30-feet to ground level, in that; the employer did not ensure an adequately sized airbag or (safety net) was used and correctly positioned to protect the employee from contacting the lower ground level.”
This means that AGT did not take safety precautions into account. OSHA places the blame on production for providing a surface “four feet or more above a lower level” to prevent a fall from happening. They found there was no walking area or surface that could’ve prevented Goodwin from being injured. In addition, the show did not meet the requirements with these added precautions.
John Goodwin shares details on paralysis
OSHA followed up with an immediate investigation into AGT following the incident. On Friday, Goodwin took to his Instagram Story to open up about his paralysis. He revealed the specific type of paralysis he has, which “starts around the hip height.” He severed his spinal cord during the accident.
However, Goodwin remains in good spirits. The AGT alum says that he’s still “me, but just sitting down.” He also shared his love and gratitude for his fans. Goodwin’s career has ended, but he’s still hopeful about his future. He last took to Instagram to share a photo of himself with a dog on his lap.
“6 months ago I went to rehearse something and left this little hairy monkey waiting patiently for me… he didn’t see his dad again until just a couple of weeks ago and when he finally did, dad had new cool wheels. A lot has changed in the last 6 months, but love is a constant and I’m very very loved. Looking forward to my next chapters and being a roll model.”
The incident happened when Goodwin tried to escape a straitjacket while he hung upside down between two cars. Due to poor timing, the crew members released the cars early, causing him to be crushed between the vehicles as they caught on fire. This led to numerous injuries, including his paralysis.
