In 2020, The Final Season of Attack On Titan began in earnest. By the end of the Final Season, a Part 2 to the end was announced. The Final Season Part 2 had its last episode just recently. And still, the Final Season just keeps going. Attack On Titan‘s Final Season seems to be the season that will just never end. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just confusing that they chose to announce Season 4 as the end when it’s clearly not.
The End Of Attack On Titan
The Attack On Titan anime first hit the air in 2013 and quickly became one of the most popular anime around the world. The grit and gore in combination with the unpredictability of the show’s killings make it highly entertaining. Not to mention the underlying mysteries that continue to build on top of each other like Lost at its peak.
The show has had a rocky development cycle since that highly-successful premiere. Season 2 didn’t premiere until 2017, 4 years after the first season. And it took Season 3 another 2 years after that to finally premiere. In 2021, both the show and the manga were supposed to be coming to an end at the same time. The manga released its final chapter in June of 2021. The Final Season was airing at a similar time, and then Part 2 of the Final Season got its announcement. Now, shortly after the release of Final Season Part 2’s final episode, there is an announcement for Final Season Part 3.
Currently, the anime has nearly caught up to the manga, at around Chapter 130 of 139. The manga’s ending was almost universally panned, however, leading some to believe that the purpose of the Part 3 announcement is so the studio can attempt to make an ending that’s more satisfying for diehard fans.
It’s not even officially known at the moment whether or not Part 3 is truly the end of the series. It’s assumed to be, but Part 1 was assumed to be the end as well, and here we are.
Maybe Just Call It Season 5 & 6
The question is, what’s the point of having a Final Season in 3 parts? They’re essentially just Seasons 4, 5, and 6 of the show. The Sopranos did something similar by having their final season, Season 6, air in 2 parts. This essentially just means the show has 7 seasons that are credited as 6 seasons for whatever purpose.
But, at the end of the day, if the showrunners for the anime can get the ending right in Part 3, fans will be more than happy to see it. The manga’s ending was fairly unsatisfying with no spoilers leaving fans longing for something more.
