My Hero Academia is Japan’s response to the modern superhero craze of Marvel and DC. In its colorful but troubled world, being a hero is a job with roots in politics as much as talent. There are so many characters in the anime that it can be difficult for each to get real development. But over the course of the show’s very successful 5 seasons, it’s found time for everyone to get some sort of story.

Now, the manga the anime is based on, which is still ongoing and highly successful as well, has a new story that may be leading up to one character’s most significant arc yet.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is a prequel manga following the backstories of several significant characters from the main story. One of those characters is Shota Aizawa AKA Eraserhead. He’s one of the primary teachers of Class 1-A. Aizawa’s personality tends to be a mixture of apathy and quiet trauma. My Hero Academia: Vigilantes delves into the primary reason for this in a way the anime has yet to.

In Aizawa’s student days, his best friend Oboro was killed while in training alongside him. Aizawa could not save him. Even worse, his corpse was transformed into a hideous Nomu by All For One. It’s reasonable why Aizawa became the way he currently is in the main story.

In Vigilantes, Aizawa is currently set to play a major role in saving the city of Naruhata. The city is under siege by multiple villains with fire quirks. Fire is a difficult thing to control once it’s blazing. However, Aizawa’s quirk enables him to stop the fires from ever starting. His quirk allows him to disable anyone else’s quirk, as long as he doesn’t blink.

Aizawa AKA Eraserhead

We know Aizawa still holds a lot of trauma from Oboro’s fate in the present day. His attitude in the most recent season of the anime shows as much. But maybe this storyline in Vigilantes will explain a little more why he’s never fully given up. Why Aizawa is still around and a hero today.

Sadly, there don’t seem to be any plans to adapt My Hero Academia: Vigilantes into an anime just yet. The spin-off isn’t quite as successful as the main series, but it still has a lot of fans. And it’s certain that anything with the MHA branding will do well, so hopefully, we’ll see an announcement in the future.

Season 6 of My Hero Academia is premiering in the fall of 2022. My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is still ongoing and has several volumes for sale out now.
