My Hero Academia has been one of the most successful manga both in and out of Japan for the better part of 7 years now. The anime has had equal levels of success since its premiere in 2016. The manga has consistently hit the top of sales charts. But, recently, the worldwide superhero hit was surpassed in sales.
Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia has sold an insanely high 65 million copies worldwide since 2014. With those types of numbers, it’s no small feat to exceed the hit title. But, not only has it been passed, it’s been passed by a far newer addition to the manga world.
The My Hero Academia Killer
The title currently surpassing My Hero Academia is Jujutsu Kaisen. And if you haven’t heard of it, you probably haven’t spoken to any anime fans recently. It’s one of the biggest phenomena in Japan and the anime/manga community right now. There’s only one season of the anime currently out, but it’s already at the top of Crunchyroll (A popular anime streaming service).
The manga for Jujutsu Kaisen has now sold more than not just My Hero Academia, but other popular manga like Berserk and Sailor Moon as well. The timeframe within which Jujutsu Kaisen is doing these sales numbers is even more impressive. The manga has been coming out since 2018. In contrast to the aforementioned titles, My Hero Academia began releasing in 2014, and Sailor Moon was first released in 1991. That’s more sales than two of the most recognizable names in manga in only 4 years.
One Of The Biggest Films Of 2022
To add even further to Jujutsu Kaisen‘s wild success, there’s a movie currently showing in theaters with the title Jujutsu Kaisen 0. It’s a prequel to the series, and one of the rare instances of a Japanese anime film showing in US theaters. The film currently has made nearly $150 million at the box office. This puts Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in the top 10 highest-grossing anime films of all time. An insanely lofty accomplishment for such a new title.
It’s clear that Jujutsu Kaisen is here to stay. The fanbase is huge, loud, and growing every day. After only one season, the anime is already being rated as one of the greatest anime of the 21st century. This gives the series unbelievably high expectations for its second season. That type of pressure is surely nerve-wracking for such a new show. But, they have a lot of highly-successful source material to draw from. If you haven’t read or watched this new hit title, yet, now’s the time. It’s only going to increase in notoriety from here.
