The upcoming Netflix Original animated series is set in the same world as the classic tabletop card game. Originally, the series was to be produced by the Russo Brothers, the directors of Avengers Endgame. However, they have since left the project.
Who came up with the table-top card game?
Richard Garfield was the mind behind the creation of Magic: The Gathering. The popular tabletop card game was first released in 1993 and has become increasingly popular over its 28-year history. With all its expansions and the thousands of cards since produced, the franchise has spawned comic books. Moreover, Magic: The Gathering has led to a best-selling novel, as well as e-sports based on the popular digital game, Magic: The Gathering Arena.
The original game was published in 11 languages and it is available in more than 70 countries. Seeing as the franchise has more than 38 million fans, it is likely that the animated series will be hugely popular.
Plot of Magic: The Gathering
Netflix has yet to reveal an official synopsis for the animated series. However, with the recent cast announcement, it is likely to focus on the adventures of Gatewatch, the multiverse’s most powerful planeswalkers who protect the world from harm.
Netflix revealed that Brandon Routh (Arrowverse, Superman Returns) will voice the character of Gideon Jura. He reveals that Gideon is the strong guy who always stands up for what’s right and just, and isn’t afraid to fight.

Gideon is one of the group of planeswalkers, some of the most powerful beings in the multiverse. According to Whats On Netflix, he is a powerful Hieromancer. This allows him to use his protective powers by enforcing order or suppressing the abilities of others. Jura was a co-founder of Gatewatch, the coalition of planeswalkers protecting the multiverse from world-ending threats.
Other Gatewatch members that still need to be cast include Jace Beleren, Chandra Nalaar and Nissa Revane. Liliana Vess, Ajani Goldmane, Teferi and Kaya are also still awaiting casting.
