The Guilty is a remake of the popular Danish crime-thriller of the same name. The Netflix Original movie is directed by Antonie Fuqua. Meanwhile, the production of the film is led by Jake Gyllenhaal’s own Nine Stories Productions along with Michael Litvak’s Bold Films. As for the screenplay, the writer is Nic Pizzolatto, who has previously worked on True Detective, Deadwood: The Movie and The Magnificent Seven.
The plot of The Guilty involves a demoted police officer, Joe Bayler (Gyllenhaal), assigned to the 911 call center. Joe becomes conflicted when he receives an emergency phone call from an allegedly kidnapped woman. Meanwhile, as Joe tries to save the caller, he soon discovers that nothing is quite what it seems. Moreover, he finds out that facing the truth is the only way out. In fact, according to Netflix’s official synopsis, Joe has a “harrowing day of revelations — and reckonings.”

Jake Gyllenhaal plays the lead role of Joe Bayler and has previously starred in Donnie Darko, Nightcrawler and Brokeback Mountain. Meanwhile, Gyllenhaal’s previous Netflix Original films are the terrifying horror-thriller Velvet Buzzsaw and the fantasy drama Okja. Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird Box, Station 19, Band-Aid) plays the role of Abby and Jess is played by Gillian Zinser (Savages, 90210, Liars All).
Other actors in the project include Ethan Hawke (Before Sunrise, Before Midnight, Training Day). Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass, Kinsey, Garden State) and Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road, It Comes at Night, American Honey) also star. Others include Paul Dano (There Will be Blood, 12 Years a Slave, Little Miss Sunshine) and Byron Bowers (Concrete Cowboy, Honey Boy, The Chi).
Production and release date of the Netflix Original film The Guilty
Reportedly, the principal photography on the film was in Los Angeles in November 2020. Currently, it is unclear if production and filming have wrapped on the new Netflix film, but it does seem likely.

As for its release, the crime-thriller film The Guilty will first premiere in select theaters on September 24, 2021. The movie will then be released on the streaming channel on Friday, October 1, 2021. At present, no trailer is available for the Netflix film.
