’90 Day Fiance’ Update: Karine Staehle Admits She Lied About Sexual Abuse Allegations
’90 Day Fiance’ franchise stars Paul Staehle and Karine Martins have what many fans consider a disturbing relationship. Just over a year ago while Karine was pregnant with the couple’s second child, things took a nasty turn. During a very chaotic season in the couple’s marriage – both began acting erratically and irresponsibly. Many fans will remember the pair during their ‘separation’ fighting over their eldest son, Pierre. The couple were repeatedly involved in arguments that resulted in police interference. At one point, the situation had escalated to the point that fans became very concerned for Karine, Pierre, and the health of the couple’s unborn child. Why? Because Karine made some very serious allegations about her husband, Paul, that included physical and sexual abuse.
Now, a year later, the couple has taken to social media – as usual- to tell fans that all allegations of abuse, sexual or otherwise were FALSE. Will fans believe her now? Read on to get the shocking details.
Language Barriers and Restraining Orders
Back in 2020, after a very public argument between TLC stars Paul Staehle and his wife, Karine, fans watched in awe as this relationship appeared to go to hell in a handbasket. From the beginning, one of the main issues these two had was the obstructive language barrier. Paul, an American, spoke mostly English. Karine on the other hand is a native Brazilian where the primary language is Portuguese. The couple had such issues understanding each other in the beginning that they hired a translator to help them communicate. In retrospect, both have since said that having a third-party translator often caused issues for them because their intent and tone were often lost in translation, resulting in explosive arguments.
During one particularly tumultuous period in their relationship, the couple split and subsequently took out restraining orders on each other. During their break the both parties were constantly on social media, goading each other and making accusations. Show fans were not sure who to believe or if any of it was actually true.
Karine Accuses Paul Staehle Of Domestic and Sexual Abuse
Back in August of 2020, the pair were engaged in a domestic argument that escalated to the point that Karine ended up calling the police. According to Blasting News, Paul recorded the entire event, stealthily, on his phone. Allegedly, none of the parties on the scene were aware that he was streaming the entire interaction to his Instagram, where fans were very disturbed by his erratic behavior. This post was quickly removed from Instagram.
Shortly after Paul Staehle would post a copy of the police report, seemingly to get sympathy from fans. This stunt, however, quickly blew up in his face when fans read in the police report that Karine had revealed to the police that she was being sexually abused. Then 23-year-old Karine detailed to authorities that Paul forced her to perform oral sex by forcing himself into her mouth. The report also told fans that this would escalate into full-blown non-consensual sex. The reality wife alleged that if she were to resist or complain Paul would throw things at her, and make threats. She said Paul’s go-to threats were that he would get her Green Card revoked, or take her child from her. At that time the couple had one son, Pierre who was about a year old at the time.
The List of Allegations Continues
Fans of the TLC series 90 Day Fiance watched on for weeks in horror as new information and allegations surfaced between this reality couple. In addition to the domestic and sexual abuse allegations, Karine says that Paul Staehle had their entire residence under 24-hour camera surveillance and that he continuously monitored her actions, prohibiting her from leaving the home. She also alleged that her husband restricted access to her own bank accounts, leaving her unable to manage or utilize her own funds, leaving her helpless and completely dependent on him.
Karine told fans and authorities that she was afraid of trying to go back to Brazil – because she feared that Paul would attempt to harm her and her son, either directly or indirectly. Karine did eventually make it back to Brazil, unscathed.
A year later, despite supposed ‘divorce papers’ and numerous back and forth allegations – the couple appears to have reconciled. They now have two sons, Pierre, and Ethan, whom Karine was pregnant with during the later part of this debacle. Karine’s choice to reconcile with Paul really shook up her followers — especially after such heinous allegations of abuse. It seems, however, that her physical well-being may have never been in jeopardy at all.
Karine Staehle Admits to Fans Sexual Abuse Allegations Were ‘False’
Nearly a year later, Karine Staehle is now recanting her allegations of abuse. The 90 Day Fiance franchise star took to Instagram yesterday to post an apology to her husband and let fans know that the allegations from the previous year were a mistake. She says her husband did NOT rape or abuse her and that the entire situation was a mixup resulting from a bad choice in the translator. Pop Culture reports that Karine had officially dropped the abuse charges against Paul in September of 2020 before moving to Brazil, however, that detail wasn’t made public.
In a short video story posted to Instagram on Saturday, March 20th, Karine said “Hello everybody. I’m here to apologize about the accusations about Paul, [they are] false. The translator who tried [to] help me was wrong and did not understand me cause my English is no good,” “I’m so sorry. I’m sorry, Paul.”
The video is no longer on the Instagram platform.
Paul Shows Support for Karine on Instagram
While we may never know the complete truth of what went on behind the scenes for this 90-Day Fiance, the couple seems to be together and at least attempting to work out their issues. Soon after Karine’s initial Instagram post recanting the sexual abuse allegations on Saturday, Paul also made several Instagram posts.
In a lengthy text, posted as an Instagram story, Paul explains to fans that the claims against him were not Karine’s fault – that she was working with an ‘uncertified’ translator at that time who didn’t understand what was being said. He alleges that the ‘translator’ tried to get Karine to have an abortion and have false charges placed on him.
The post then goes in an entirely different direction – He then says that the sexual abuse charges were a creation of the ‘fan’ who was acting as Karine’s translator. Allegedly the ‘fan/translator’ filed false police reports on Karine’s behalf and attempted to have him killed because she wanted to assist Karine in ‘getting rid of him permanently.’
Paul included a second post on Saturday as well. It basically thanks Karine for being a wonderful mother to their children. He says that he doesn’t blame her for ‘past events’ and that he will strive daily to understand her better.
Will Fan’s Accept This New Information?
Honestly, it could go either way. Fans tend to side with either Paul or Karine though there are many who believe neither of them is trustworthy. Show editing and Paul’s incessant social media posts blow their fights out of proportion on a regular basis. They seem life-and-death/larger-than-life. This has led many viewers to feel very disconnected from them. Additionally – fans have become very wary of the information presented by both Karine and Paul because their statements constantly change. This recant included. Paul has also admitted that he suffers from what he calls a ‘social media addiction.’ This seems to explain his constant need to share, amplify, and involve outsiders in every marriage issue through social media. Viewers are hopeful they are doing as well now as they make themselves out to be.
