‘Shark Tank’ Host Wants To Save TikTok By Buying It
There are a lot of Americans who are fearing the next two weeks, and Shark Tank could ease their fears. The United States government has said it will ban TikTok since it believes the Chinese company that owns it will share Americans’ personal information with the Chinese government. The same feelings are not shared with American companies like X, which could also share people’s personal information with the U.S. government.
However, there is one person who believes he can save TikTok. It is a Shark Tank star, and he has a plan.
Why Does the United States Want to Ban TikTok?
For the past few years, TikTok has become the best social media platform on the planet. In 2024, Facebook still reigned supreme with 3.1 billion active users, followed by YouTube with 2.5 billion. TikTok ranks below WhatsApp and Instagram (both owned by Meta, same as Facebook) with 1.6 billion users.
However, there are people in the U.S. intelligence community who believe that the company that owns TikTok could share the information it collects from American users with the Chinese government. As a result, the U.S. wants to ban TikTok in this country to protect American’s privacy from the foreign country.
The date for its banning is January 19. This could be devastating for the U.S. economy, though. The TikTok ban could cost U.S. small businesses around $1.3 billion in revenue and earnings in just one month. That is how important this social media tool has become for advertising. Losing that much money at once would severely damage the economy and cut into earnings and spending for the nation.
However, Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary, 70, has a plan to save TikTok and protect America’s interests. He said that he has a plan in place to buy the company, but he needs help to make this happen.
Shark Tank Star Kevin O’Leary Wants To Buy TikTok
Kevin O’Leary was on Fox News’ The Story with Martha MacCallum on Monday and spoke about his desire to buy TikTok before it is banned. However, he said that he can’t do it without help from President-elect Donald Trump. This could happen since Trump has said he wants to save TikTok as well.
“Trump will be who we have to work with to close the deal in the months ahead. So I wanted to let him know, as well as others in his cabinet, that we’re doing this, and we’re going to need their help,” O’Leary said (via The Wrap). O’Leary also said that he would partner with former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt in the buyout.
“This isn’t just about buying TikTok’s U.S. assets. It’s about something much bigger: protecting the privacy of 170 million American users. It’s about empowering creators and small businesses. And it’s about building a platform that prioritizes PEOPLE over algorithms,” he said.
