Dancing With The Stars fans are relieved to know that Derek Hough’s wife, Hayley, is in much better shape after her medical emergency last winter. Onscreen, they thanked fans and loved ones for their prayers and well-wishes. But as they go back on tour for the winter of 2024, they’re dealing with heavy emotions.

Hayley & Derek Hough Get Emotional Over Returning To DC

Last December, Derek and Hayley Hough were performing around the country in their Symphony of Dance tour. They were doing their show in Washington, D.C. when the unimaginable happened. Hayley suffered a brain bleed during the performance and suffered seizures backstage. They rushed her to the hospital where she required emergency skull surgery to save her life.

The process was long, intense, and emotionally agonizing. But Hayley survived. At the hospital, doctors told the couple she may never walk again. However, she felt determined to prove them wrong. Through therapy, bravery, and support, Hayley managed to rejoin the Symphony of Dance tour.

Last week on Dancing With The Stars, the couple performed a stunning routine.

Now, the holidays are just around the corner. The Houghs are going back on tour and plan to make a stop in Washington, D.C. where their lives were forever changed.

“It’s actually really crazy. We’re going to the exact venue where it happened again. Almost an entire year later. We’re gonna be flooded with emotions I know. He’s gonna really feel it,” Hayley shared in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“I’m really excited to just get out there and show everybody what I still can do,” she added. Derek also revealed that Hayley’s recovery story is being recorded in a documentary they expect to be released in 2025.

The Couple Takes Proper Precautions When It Comes To Hayley’s Health

Although Hayley Erbert Hough has made a remarkable recovery, she and Derek understand they can’t take risks. They’re constantly monitoring Hayley’s condition and have an emergency plan in place if something happens while on tour.

“We’re just very cautious,” Derek told PEOPLE last week. “But I’m very, very, very mindful — almost maybe overly mindful — of things that we do, moves that we do to make sure that she’s protected [so] she’s safe at all times.”

“For me, it’s all about just listening to my body,” Hayley added. “I’m very in tune with my body as a dancer and I’m always like, I can tell when something’s off and I’ll be like, ‘Ooh, that doesn’t feel quite right. I shouldn’t be doing this move’ or ‘I shouldn’t be doing this number.’ I feel like I am being smart in that way of just being like, ‘I’m going to listen to myself.’”
