Demi Lovato’s Mental Health Battles Led To Suicide Petition
Demi Lovato’s mental health battles led to a suicide petition and her childhood career left her with childhood trauma. After previously expressing the dangers of a career as a child star, new truths emerge in the trailer for her upcoming documentary.
Demi Lovato As A Child Star
Demi Lovato got her start in acting with another big Disney Channel and child star, Selena Gomez. The two became fast friends when they got their start working on the child series, Barney & Friends. This was Lovato’s first on-screen role at about 8 years old as Angela.
As the show was mainly for kids younger than 8, Lovato believes that her appearance on the show was why she got bullied. After the children’s show, Demi got her first big break as a lead in the Disney Channel hit movie, Camp Rock.
Lovato said she did have a lot of fun on set and even remembers some of the dances which she reminisced about with co-star Alyson Stoner in the trailer for her upcoming documentary. Demi Lovato knew that everyone wanted to make it in the industry, but also that such fame came with a price.
After Camp Rock, Lovato was the star of the Disney Channel series Sonny With A Chance and got to co-star with her old friend Selena Gomez in the Princess Protection Program. Lovato also became a singer/songwriter and began sharing her music with the world. Additionally, Lovato was on The Mask Singer as Anonymouse.
Lovato has discussed her battle with drugs and alcohol in the past. She explained how she began experimenting with them at age 13 after getting opiates after a car accident. Additionally, she was even doing coke at just 17 years old which she explained on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
The singer/songwriter even discussed her battle through her song “Sober” which was released in 2018. Demi even discusses growing up with an eating disorder that came back around the time of this song’s release.
Her Upcoming Documentary
Lovato has taken to her Instagram to share her directional debut for her upcoming documentary about child stars. In the trailer posted, familiar faces like Raven-Symoné, Drew Barrymore, and Jojo Siwa can be seen.
One of the biggest moments taken away from the trailer is when Lovato expresses that “the popular girls signed a suicide petition saying I should kill myself.” Though it was only a brief moment in the trailer, it was extremely impactful.
Alyson Stoner expresses “the intense pressures” that came with being a childhood star. This was something everyone in the trailer seemed to understand all too well.

Answering someone’s question of whether the fame is worth everything she went through, Demi answers: “I wouldn’t end up where I am had I not made all the choices leading up to this point. But it came with a price.”
Demi also revealed that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2011. Moreover, she is in a constant battle with her mental health. She has been through multiple mental health treatments so theres hope she is back on track. In June, she expressed “finding the light again” after her 5th in-patient mental health treatment.
Seemingly, Lovato is in a much better place with her mental and physical health. She posts a lot of cooking videos on her TikTok. Furthermore, she is reportedly engaged to Jordan “Jutes” Lutes who she has been dating since August 2022. They got engaged on December 16th, 2023 as confirmed by a rep from Demi’s team.
Child Star is coming to Hulu on September 17th.
