Many reality television fans often wonder how much of what they are watching is true and how much is scripted. For shows like Real Housewives, a lot is expected to be scripted. However, with competition shows like AGT with prize money on the line, most shows are expected to be legitimate. It has to be with prizes up for grabs.

Here is what one former contestant said about what happens during America’s Got Talent.

Is America’s Got Talent Scripted?

There are laws to regulate shows that offer cash prizes. These include game shows like The Price is Right and Jeopardy!, and the laws ensure that everything is on the up and up. Despite this, some fans still accuse shows of being rigged when their favorites lose.

These accusations happen even more in reality competition shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent. Whenever someone’s favorite singer is eliminated, people accuse the shows of being rigged or cheating the singers. While it is not likely true that the voting is rigged, the shows almost certainly do a lot to spotlight who they want to win to influence voting.

It is this way on Survivor, American Idol, and America’s Got Talent. However, for AGT, a former contestant made accusations against the show. A circus act from 2012 said there is a provision in the show’s deal that states the producers “reserve the right to determine the winner by any means they choose” (via Live Journal).

That is distressing itself in its wording. However, the circus act also pointed out some clearly disingenuous methods by which AGT influences fan votes.

Does AGT Rig The Outcomes?

According to this performer, the producers didn’t let them perform their act the way they did it best. Instead, they said the AGT producers actually “storyboarded” the performance. They also said they had to do a test run in front of the judges and audience before the show started filming.

The act had their mother in the audience. They allege they met up with her after the show, and she explained why the crowd booed their performance. Their mom said, “that the audience was coached, their cue to boo was the crewman with the white sign in front of stage right.”

They said there were plants in the audience to lead the rest of the audience in the reaction that the producers wanted to hear. “Knowing that the contest and the voting and the judging is rigged, I don’t know why it surprises me so much that the audience is rigged, too,” she said.

Do you think America’s Got Talent is scripted? Do you think there might be some aspects of AGT that are scripted and others that are real? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

  1. Don’t know about being scripted, but the overall production has gotten worse over the years.
Camera work of the group acts is poor, audience reaction shots seem more important and the sound mixing stinks. The television audience seems to be the secondary priority and we are what drives the the show. I watch the show to watch the performances not the judges or the audience.

  2. i watch it alot and there has been golden buzzzers than are not worthy of it while unbel acts dontake it like tbe lady that walked in ballet shoes on wine bottles whike a 4 person group swung on a metal bar box doing spins that dont compate in talent to that lady

  3. Not watching any more. Should be The WORLD Has Talent. More acts from other countries than from America. Be honest and rename the show

  4. Absolutely right! My wife and I have been counting the acts from America and those from other countries. America looses! We are interested in seeing acts from America as the name implies. We also, along with other disappointed couples we know, have about decided to not watch anymore. There’s so much other good programs to watch.
