Unusual Way Producers Found ‘Golden Bachelorette’ Suitors
Golden Bachelorette producers searched far and wide to find the best suitors for Joan Vassos. Some of their methods were a little unusual, to say the least. Keep reading for more.
Why Joan Vassos Was Chosen Over Faith Or Leslie
Entertainment Tonight was on hand for one of the group dates on the upcoming season of The Golden Bachelorette. The outlet chatted with the three producers working on the spinoff: Claire Freeland, Bennett Graebner, and Jason Erlich.
Before the official announcement from ABC, fans were expecting Faith Martin, Leslie Fhima, or maybe Susan Noles to get the lead role. All three ladies were contestants on Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor.
The role ultimately went to Joan Vassos, who only briefly appeared on Gerry’s season. She left the show in Week 3 to return home to her family amid a family emergency.
Claire Freeland spoke out about why they went with Joan over the others. “Joan’s journey was cut short by something that is very relatable. Joan is a caregiver and that’s why she left her journey last season.”
She continued, “[Joan] still has a sincere desire to find her next great love. I don’t feel like people got to see enough of her, so I’m thrilled that she’s back.”
Last week, the network unveiled the 24 suitors who hope to find love with Joan Vassos.
How ABC Show Typically Finds Contestants
The show typically advertises via print media or with TV ads. With the rise of social media, they also put the casting information on various social media platforms and the ABC website.
An unnamed Golden Bachelorette suitor told ET that his family encouraged him to apply. “My oldest daughter thought it would be a great idea. I wasn’t really into it, but she insisted.”

Bachelor Nation fans have already met one of Joan Vassos’ men. Viewers met Kelsey Anderson’s father, Mark, during her hometown date with Joey Graziadei. She told him to apply for the Golden Bachelorette, and he made it through the casting process.
Unusual Way Producers Found Golden Bachelorette Suitor
One suitor spilled to the entertainment site the unorthodox way he was cast on the show. It seems the producers used a ‘bait and switch’ tactic.
“I was swiping on a dating app, and all of a sudden, I saw someone who looked interesting, so I swiped right. The next day I found out I got a match — and the first thing she said was, ‘Oh hey, I’m a casting director for The Golden Bachelorette. Would you like to be on it?'”
