Fans are frequently surprised by the on-air blunders made by contestants on Family Feud. Recently, an answer to a survey question in relation to musical instruments had viewers rushing to social media to weigh in, appalled by what the contestant said. So, what had fans so shocked? Keep reading to find out.

Fans Lose Their Minds Over Contestant’s Answer

Earlier this week, Family Feud shared a clip on YouTube that received some backlash from fans. Steve Harvey asked the contestant to “name a musical instrument people strum.” Typically, you would think of harp, guitar, or bass.

One contestant, Melanie, responded, “A drum.” Surprisingly, host Steve Harvey didn’t seem to be floored by the answer. He is often stunned silent by the answers some of the contestants on Family Feud come up with. Of course, the answer wasn’t up on the board, but it did earn Melanie plenty of criticism in the comment section.

“Strumming a drum? Huh, I must’ve missed that day in music class,” one viewer joked. Another quipped, “I’m a former percussionist, and I don’t remember strumming a drum. Lol.” A third person laughed, “When that person said ‘drums,’ I almost collapsed on the floor.”

While many other people joked at Melanie’s expense in the comments, one person backed her up. “Strum and drum do rhyme. Maybe that’s what she thought. What rhymes with strum?” one person wrote.

Family Feud Viewership Is Solid After 25 Years

Family Feud has been on television since 1976 and it is in its 25th season. After all that time, millions of people still tune in to hear some of the crazy answers people come up with (like “drum”).

In June of last year, it was reported that the Feud still raked in 8 million viewers per episode. That is one of the highest viewership totals in syndicated TV.

On top of that, Family Feud has a significant following online. The game show has 6 million followers on Facebook, 3.8 million subscribers on YouTube, 2 million followers on Instagram, and 88,000 followers on X.

Steve Harvey is currently in the running for being the longest-standing host on the game show. He started hosting Family Feud in 2010. Former hosts included John O’Hurley, Louie Anderson, Ray Combs, Richard Dawson, and Richard Karn.

The show’s official website dotes on Steve. It reads, “What can we say about Steve that hasn’t already been said? He’s on Dawson’s heels as our longest-standing host, and audiences can’t get enough of his snappy wardrobe and his quick wit.”

The statement continues, “We love Steve just as much as our fans—and we can’t imagine the show without him.” Fans feel the same way. Many of them praise Steve in the comments for his funny responses and love tuning in.
