Are ‘Bridgerton’ Showrunners Planning To Kill Off Queen Charlotte?
Bridgerton fans know that the series, as well as the spin-off Queen Charlotte, are based on historical events. It’s based in the early 19th century and some real-life historical figures appear in the show. England’s King George III and his queen consort Charlotte Mecklenburg-Strelitz are the central figures in the spin-off.
As much as viewers love Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuvel, it’s entirely possible her time on Bridgerton could be coming to an end. Season 3 takes place around 1815. The real queen died in 1818.
So does the production team have plans to kill off the beloved character on the show?
Historically, Queen Charlotte Would Have Died Within The Bridgerton Timeline
Bridgerton premiered on Netflix during the early days of the pandemic, captivating viewers around the world. Almost immediately, fans fell in love with Queen Charlotte, the snarky monarch with larger-than-life wigs.
While Golda Rosheuvel does a remarkable job bringing the queen to life, Charlotte Mecklenburg-Strelitz was a real person and sadly passed away in 1818, which is directly in the middle of the Bridgerton storyline.
So will the iconic Netflix show feature her death?
According to Bridgerton’s production team, they’re going to keep the glamorous monarch alive as long as they can.
“I worship Golda Rosheuvel, and I think she’s so fantastic in her role. Shonda [Rhimes] and I, internally, have just decided that we’re in an alternate dimension,” series showrunner Jess Brownell shared with TVLine.
Brownell confirmed Bridgerton takes place in an entirely alternate reality. Queen Charlotte viewers remember that the queen herself and Lady Danbury worked to integrate People of Color into the predominately white society. Brownell says this is where the alternate reality kicked off.
“That’s where we went into another timeline,” she told the publication. “There’s potential that in this timeline, Queen Charlotte could live forever.”
The Production Team Is Excited To Keep Telling The Queen’s Story
Before the Bridgerton spin-off Queen Charlotte premiered, the production team wanted to make it clear that the story was never intended to be a precise historical documentary. Instead, it’s a romantic drama loosely based on real events.
As a result, the team can take as many creative liberties as they like.
“We really delve into the history of Queen Charlotte and extract the elements to ground it in some reality, but we’re very clear when we diverge from that path,” executive producer Tom Verica previously told TVLine. “So Shonda extracted real elements of the story to be able to give authenticity to the time period, but clearly in the retelling of our story, decided where it leans into our story and how we get to the Queen Charlotte that we know at that time.”
