CBS Cancels ‘NCIS: Hawaii’ After 3 Seasons: All The Details On This Shock Announcement
In a shock announcement on Friday, CBS announced it was canceling NCIS: Hawaii after three seasons. This is the first in the franchise with a female lead, Vanessa Lachey. In addition, in Season 3, they added LL Cool J to reprise his role as Sam Hanna. He has introduced the NCIS: Elite. Now, it seems that this storyline will be done.
This shocking announcement is just one week from when the network was to announce its Fall 2024 schedule. That will be on May 2. Here are all the details about the cancelation, and how fans nearly got a shortened Season 4.
CBS Cancels NCIS: Hawaii In A Shock Move
On Friday, Deadline reported that NCIS: Hawaii has been canceled, and is ending with Season 3. This spinoff is the number 12 most-watched non-sports broadcast television program with an average of 7.8 million viewers every week. Many outlets have commented that other networks would have considered this a no-brainer and kept this series on the network.
In a week where the network canceled So Help Me Todd and renewed The Equalizer, there had to be some hope that this show would see another beautiful Hawaiian sunrise. Moreover, it sounds like there was some hope for more.
NCIS: Hawaii Nearly Got Shortened Season 4
As the final two episodes of NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 are airing on April 29, and May 6, fans may wonder if this is a proper series ending like they gave other series. According to the Deadline piece, this final episode is not a series finale. In addition, it is a two-part season, now series finale. But, it is not a cliffhanger.
Moreover, there was talk about making Season 4. The producers agreed to a shortened season, and “a massive budget cut.” Therefore, this announcement has come as quite a shock as it appeared that they were heading into a final, shortened season to tie up loose ends.
CBS Has New Spinoffs Coming In The Fall
Although NCIS: Hawaii is ending, two new spinoffs are coming to CBS and Paramount+ in the fall. That includes NCIS: Origins, which is the young Gibbs story. Mark Harmon, who is an EP along with his son Sean, will be narrating this series.
Also, there is an untitled Tony and Ziva spinoff that will take place in Europe. They will start filming this in Europe in the next couple of months. In addition, during the strike, NCIS: Sydney was moved from Paramount+ to CBS to fill in the empty schedule. Also, this was the first international series for the franchise, and it was recently renewed.
Lastly, what seems unfortunate was that they did not move this series to Paramount+, especially as there is going to be more NCIS-related content streaming there already.
