Katy Perry announced that she is leaving American Idol after this season ends. This will be the first change in judges since ABC brought Idol back and resurrected it after Fox canceled the show. One of her fellow judges, Luke Bryan, has weighed in with his thoughts about Katy leaving the show.

Here is what Luke Bryan said about the Idol changes and why it isn’t surprising to him.

What Does Luke Bryan Think About Katy Perry Leaving American Idol?

Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie will continue as judges on American Idol, so only one judge’s chair needs replacing in Season 23. While Katy Perry leaving the show is surprising to fans, it didn’t surprise her fellow judge Luke Bryan. In a recent interview, he said it wasn’t a “huge shock” to learn that Katy was leaving the singing competition series.

“I had heard whispers that she was thinking about it — it wasn’t like a huge shock,” Luke said when asked about Katy leaving the show (via Taste of Country). He went on to say that she might have gotten “caught up in the moment” when she told Jimmy Kimmel that she was leaving the show before an official announcement arrived.

“It’s been a good run with Katy, and she and I have developed a great friendship and to work alongside her,” Luke continued. He joked that he was there before her daughter was born and now Katy’s little girl is three years old. He also said he doesn’t think Katy leaving will affect their friendship.

“She knows that no matter what her next endeavors are, that she can pick up the phone and call me and check in and say hey,” Luke said. He was also asked about a possible collaboration, and he refused to speculate on that. Luke said it all depends on the songs, which are all “artist-based.” Luke also admitted he wasn’t sure how long he would stay, as the judges are all on year-to-year contracts.

Is Katy Perry Preparing For New Album?

While Katy Perry remains polarizing with many American Idol fans thanks to her sense of humor and quirky attitude, her fans still love her. There have been rumblings among Katy’s hardcore fans about her working on American Idol and how it has stalled her musical career.

Katy Perry said that she was leaving American Idol because she wants to bring new music to the world. She said she has a “very exciting” year coming following her Idol exit. Katy has not released a new album since 2020, and reports indicate the new album will hit this year with a world tour to follow.

This is something that Lionel Richie also understands. “I have 400 years of stories and a life in the music business,” Richie said. “When Katy says, ‘I want to go and create some stories,’ remember, she’s young. But the point is that you have to take some time and actually be an artist.” (via PEOPLE).

  1. I hope this is not just a rumor but fact! I am so sick of the silliness on this show for the past few years. It’s hard to take judges opinions when they act so juvenile. I long for the days of Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr, and of course, the one and only Simon Cowell. Hopefully, we can get back to a little bit more classy show if Katy leaves!

  2. I do understand why she needs to leave but will miss her funny antics. She is so pretty & hilarious 🤣. Sure she may be too silly at times but I don’t mind. She makes us laugh. Her facial expressions at times are too cute 🥰
