Soap Opera Scam Artist Convinces Woman To Kill Her Husband
A Massachusetts woman denies that she attempted to kill her husband after being convinced by a soap opera scam artist posing as an actor from The Bold and the Beautiful.
A Townsend, Massachusetts, woman is facing a possible attempted murder charge after investigators claim she may have tried to kill her husband with tainted soup. Roxanne Doucette is accused of poisoning her husband at the urging of a scam artist claiming to be soap opera star, Thorsten Kaye.
The police investigation began on December 3, when Roxanne Doucette’s daughter, Nicole Heath, reportedly contacted police with concerns that her mother may have poisoned her father, Paul Doucette. Heath told police that she came across alarming messages she found on her mother’s phone while the pair visited Paul Doucette in the hospital.
Soap Opera Scam Artist Hatches A Devious Plan
According to police documents obtained by WCVB, Roxanne Doucette received an urgent text message from the alleged scammer. “You have to get rid of your husband honey. I need you so much,” the message read. The scam artist was posing as Kaye in an attempt to coax Roxanne Doucette into sending them money.
Later that day, Roxanne Doucette is reported to have responded by saying, “Making an amazing soup. Special potion. He will be hungry when he gets back. Just enough for him.” Two hours after the original message, she then wrote, “Hubby got back not feeling well. Maybe I can collect life insurance.”
When the soap opera scam artist asked, “Honey, when will that be?” Roxanne Doucette became apprehensive. She replied, “Don’t know,” before calling 911 shortly after. Roxanne Doucette told 911 that her husband had become unresponsive.
When Paul Doucette began to make a recovery in the hospital, police questioned him. According to the police report, Paul Doucette revealed that his wife offered him soup, but he realized that something was off. “Paul stated that Roxanne made him soup, but that it wasn’t very good. He stated that it tasted bitter,” the report said.
Roxanne Doucette Maintains Her Innocence
Despite the colorful details of the incident, Townsend Police Chief James Sartell urges the public to show restraint. “Matters like this, they draw intense interest, but the fact of the matter is, these are real people, real victims and real perpetrators. We have to take a step back and do a holistic overview,” Sartell said.
While speaking to WCVB, Roxanne Doucette offered another explanation. She believes that her husband suffered a transient ischemic attack or a mini-stroke. “I would never try to poison anybody. I mean, did daycare for 15 years, I had a licensed daycare. I’ve done nursing and I have taken care of people,” she said. “I would not hurt anyone.”
When asked about details regarding the case, Roxanne Doucette pleaded for her husband’s return. “I want my marriage back, I want my husband back,” she said. “It was a dream, to meet a soap star. [The scam artist was] saying that they loved me and they wanted me to leave my husband, but I had no intentions of leaving my husband. I love my husband very much,” she explained.
Police said that while they are investigating, Roxanne Doucette has yet to be charged in connection with her husband’s illness. However, she was charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer who attempted to collect her phone during the investigation. She was also charged with intimidation of a witness for sending her husband a letter. Roxanne Doucette has been ordered to be on home confinement as a result of the charges.
