‘Yellowstone’ Creator Reveals Kevin Costner Was Unhappy With Season 2
This year, Kevin Costner’s chaos on the Yellowstone set has caused a lot of headlines. However, Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the Paramount series has recently revealed that this is not the first time that the Field Of Dreams star has shown his displeasure with the script. Turns out, there was a major conflict during Season 2.
What did Sheridan reveal?
Why Was Kevin Costner Unhappy With Yellowstone Season 2?
Taylor Sheridan, the creator and showrunner of the Paramount hit Yellowstone recently revealed that Kevin Costner was unhappy with his character John Dutton. This bit of criticism was back in Season 2, and the Dances With Wolves star didn’t hold back what he thought about his second season character arc. He was unhappy!
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan revealed that Kevin was “very upset and said to me that the character was not going in the direction he wanted.” Taylor Sheridan’s reminded Costner that Yellowstone is “Essentially The Godfather in a ranch in Montana.” He recalled what he told Costner next. “Are you surprised that the Godfather is killing people?”
The show’s creator explained that Costner was focused on John Dutton’s “commitments to family and way of life.” The whole point of this series is that the Dutton patriarch is unable to pivot to accommodate the modern world. He is unwilling and unable to find multiple income streams from the ranch.
“Kevin felt Season 2 was deviating from that, and I don’t know that he was wrong. In Season 3, we steered back into it.”
Kevin Costner ‘Took It On The Chin’
Taylor Sheridan talked about his past relationship with Kevin Costner. Does that mean that the Yellowstone creator avoids any current rumors? Turns out, he is happy to discuss the current feud rumors that are dominating headlines.
Since February, there has been a cornucopia of news stories about how Kevin Costner had a limited amount of time available to film the remainder of Season 5. The rumors were that his availability was only a small fraction of the time that they need to finish the season.
Is Taylor Sheridan why this situation blew up? He made it clear that he does not “dictate the schedule.” This means when they film, or how long they film. Sheridan essentially explained that someone with a pay grade higher than him made those important decisions. Most of all, he contradicted any sort of animosity between him and Costner. Taylor Sheridan said that he and Kevin Costner had no issues with schedules or anything else when they conversed on the phone.
Sheridan thinks that Costner “Took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that [he] deserves it.”
