John Cena Makes Shocking Confession About The Rock
John Cena followed his fellow WWE superstars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dave Bautista into Hollywood, but he just made a shocking confession about his relationship with The Rock. Cena and Johnson didn’t have a good relationship in WWE, and here is why.
John Cena regrets his public feud with The Rock
In WWE, wrestlers take part in scripted feuds with each other. Mostly, it is a story of good guys battling bad guys, making it no different than other television shows. However, in some cases, real life plays into the storylines. That happened with John Cena and The Rock in 2012 and 2013.
At that time, The Rock had left WWE and had become a major Hollywood star. The year before, Johnson joined the Fast and the Furious franchise, with a main role in Fast Five, and his career was skyrocketing. Meanwhile, Dave Bautista was two years away from joining the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy. At the same time, Cena was the face of WWE and he took offense to people using their time in the company to leave for Hollywood.
As a result, when The Rock agreed to return for a two-year part-time stint in WWE to feud with Cena, the champion decided to go off-script on Johnson. Cena made some disparaging comments about The Rock, calling him out for being a phony and not caring about the fans or the company. He went over the line more than once, painting Johnson as a selfish man who just used WWE and its fans to get ahead in Hollywood.
That all seems funny now that Cena has left WWE and has become a top star in Hollywood as well. As a matter of fact, Cena has his own superhero franchise in Peacemaker and also joined the Fast and the Furious franchise, where he was one of the main stars in the most recent release, Fast X. In a recent interview, Cena said he regrets what he said about Johnson because he just couldn’t see the big picture.
John Cena apologizes for calling out The Rock
John Cena was on the Happy Sad Confused webcast and talked about his 2012 and 2013 WWE feud with The Rock. That feud saw them exchange the world title and had each man beat the other once. However, it was their promos that seemed a little more personal than regular wrestling promos that sucked the fans in.
“I got selfish and me — living WWE at the point and not having any concept of growth or someone else’s perspective,” Cena admitted. He said he thought Johnson’s comments about loving the business were not genuine and he felt if he loved it, he wouldn’t have left for Hollywood. He now realizes how wrong he was, and said he feels like a hypocrite now that he has mostly left for Hollywood, while still loving WWE just as much as before.
Cena also said he and Johnson should have worked things out privately, but he made it all public instead. That is what he regretted because it damaged their relationship. When it comes to Johnson and Bautista, Cena said they were “breaking down barriers, shattering ceilings, and on top of that, just transcending the art form.”
The good news is that Cena realizes he was short-sighted and selfish and he has since come to an understanding with Johnson. Cena said they are “in a really good place” now.
