Mayim Bialik Leaves ‘Jeopardy’ Before Season 39 Ends
In a shocking move, Mayim Bialik has left her job as the host of Jeopardy! with one week remaining on filming Season 39. Does this mean that Ken Jennings will be hosting for good? Here is why Mayim left the show and what is happening next.
Mayim Balik leaves production on Jeopardy!
Mayim Bialik has served as the host of Jeopardy!, splitting time with co-host Ken Jennings. However, Mayim has decided to leave her post as the host before the end of Season 39. Per The Sun, she is showing solidarity with the Writer’s Guild of America as they strike for better treatment and fair wages.
However, this won’t really affect Jeopardy!, which will finish the season as planned. Since Mayim and Ken split duties as the show’s hosts, it was easy to get Ken to come in to replace Mayim since he doesn’t share her decision to show solidarity with the writers. Jeopardy! is a WGA show and features the work of striking writers. However, all the questions for the season were written in advance of the strike, so the show can continue without the writers’ involvement.
Other shows, such as episodic television shows have re-writes while the seasons are being filmed. That is why those shows had to shut down since no writers can work on the shows during the strike. However, when it comes to Jeopardy!, there is no re-writing, so the show can go on. Since Ken doesn’t have the same feelings of unity with the writers, it was easy to keep going without missing a beat.
Why did Mayim Bialik make this decision?
This makes sense for Mayim, though. While Ken is a game show contestant turned host, that is his only connection to the world of entertainment. However, Mayim comes from the world of scripted television. She started out as the star of Blossom before moving on to The Big Bang Theory and Call Me Kat. Therefore, she has worked with writers almost her entire career and felt this was best for her.
Mayim has not posted anything about this on her socials, so she hasn’t made comments about the WGA strike or the idea that she would be leaving Jeopardy! before the season finished shooting. It is unclear if the show will do anything to penalize Bialik, who is a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild, which has announced its support of the WGA.
Jeopardy! writers Michele Loud, Jim Rhine and Billy Wisse recently joined the picket lines. Additionally, Jeopardy! is still one of the most-watched shows in syndication, with about nine million viewers a week. It ranks only second to 60 Minutes as the most-watched same-day entertainment show.
